Electric Kickers
« on: May 03, 2023, 01:15:17 PM »
Does anyone own an electric kicker?  Not a trolling motor, but a kicker capable of reaching Coho trolling speeds and maintaining it for a few hours.

Something like this:
https://plugboats.com/newport-vessels-electric-outboard-kayak-motors/

This is not a political or “save the climate” question, but it would be really nice to have a light-weight, no yank-to-crank, kicker.  For $999.00, I’d give this one a try if it ran off 48Volts instead of 36V.  Would be nice to run one these off an ebike battery.

Maybe it can be over-volted?

I watch a guy on YouTube that has an electric outboard for his sailboat dingy, he seems to like it.  The big question would be how much would a battery bank cost that could power you for several hours at coho speed.  Kokanee no problem, but coho would be much different.

Yeah, I can fish for Kokes at 1.5mph or less all day long with the MinnKota pulling 120watts or less.  But full throttle on it only gets me to 2.5mph while sucking down about 700watts.

I already have the ebike batteries, wouldn’t cost me anything.  But I’d go through one in about an hour and half and I’m not going fast enough.

Need more speed, less watts.

I use this type, I can sit in a nice comfortable seat and just steer the motor.

With a good group27 battery trolling about 1-1.5 it last about 6.5 hours.  They come in both salt and fresh water styles.  I have a 16 StarCraft open bow with 70 hp evinrude.

Okay, we will see how well this works.  I picked up a Hangkai 7.0hp, straight from the people’s republic (via Ebay).

For only ¥2,400 Yuan to my door.  What could go wrong?   :chuckle:

It works fine on my bench, better build quality than I expected.  I’ll get it out for a sea trial soon.
