I inherited a Springfield 1898 and have a few questions
« on: May 26, 2023, 04:24:22 AM »
I recently inherited a Springfield 1898. From my research it seems as if it is the Carbine version. I want to take it into a gunsmith and have them inspect it and appraise it. Since it is an antique not all gunsmiths may be knowledgeable about the gun.

I live in Sultan (Snohomish County) and would like some recommendations of who I should take it into.

I haven't "recreated" up north much in the last 20 years or so, so I'm unfamiliar with gun shops up there. There used to be a fairly knowledgeable gun guy at the old Sky Valley Sports in Monroe, but I think they closed a long time ago. If you can get down south I would suggest Pintos Gun Shop in Renton. They occasionally get Krag rifles in their shop and they must have a resident guy who inspects them.

Don't miss out on a fun opportunity to shoot and hunt with a Krag carbine. They're wonderful shooters, have the slickest bolt ever, and kill very dead. Think .30-30+ ballistics and spitzer bullets. I have a sporterized Krag I have owned since the middle 1970's, as well as two Winchester Model 95's in this caliber. The ammo is hard to find and expensive when you find it, but if you reload you will be in good shape. And don't shy away from the rifle due to the written word of the weakness of the action due to the single locking lug. This might be an issue if you reload rounds at higher pressures than specified in reloading manuals. But you are safe with factory .30-40 and also safe if you reload and follow the recipes. You're going have fun.
