14yr old daughter drew peninsula quality rifle tag!!!

Anyone ever throw a rock at a bird and never think you'll hit it, then you do and have the thought.... holy crap, what do I do now! That's the feeling I'm having right now lol I was blown away when I saw selected for her quality tag. I've archery elk hunted 7 years with the last 4 being successful. I've employed the locate and move in close and challenge the bull tactic with relative success in the sw corner of the state. That big boy country up north  has always been my goal to start hunting I just wanted to learn elk in areas that have higher densities of elk. Sorry for all the back story just wanted to let you all know kinda where I'm at as far as an elk hunter. My daughter has killed one cow on a youth cow tag (which she also drew again this year)  I live in mason county and plan to make multiple scouting trips. From talking to a few people and studying drainages and park boundaries I'm thinking at this time of focusing my attention on the Clearwater unit. I know this tag offers a very real possibility of a big big bull and that's what we will be trying for. Neither of us have ever passed on a bull so we'll see what happens if that time comes lol any information or tips on starting points or areas to check out would be greatly appreciated. I know this is big country but I told her let's get in the best shape we can and hunt as hard as we can and I think we'll have experiences we will never forget for the rest of our lives! To say I'm excited (and stressed)  is the biggest understatement!

Pretty Crazy. I'm from Mason County as well and my 11 year old son also drew this tag. He will be 12 by the time the hunt starts. Lucky kids!

Clearwater is definitely a good unit to focus on. There are big bulls there and lots of accessible land. If you look at the Goodman or the Dickey, a lot of the land is owned by Rayonier Timber and requires an access permit. Seems like there was a guy on here last year or the year before that had the tag and shot a great bull. You might do a search and see if you can contact him.

It's a whole different subject but very interesting how the points system works. I have been putting in for that tag for years, 14 points this year with no success. I'm guessing the kids couldn't have had to many points based on their age. I'm happy for them. It should be a great hunt. The opportunity to hunt elk in the rut with a rifle should be a great experience.

Huge congrats on an opportunity to hunt roosevelt elk in the heat of the rut.  Drawing the Quinaut rut tag last season turned out to be my best elk hunt ever, and i don't think it can be topped.

Should be a fun hunt either way!  I have had the privilege of drawing 2 quality bull tags during the rut and it's ALWAYS a blast!

I like our point system, but it sure is weird sometimes. I swear it has a memory!  I have 23 years of applying and he is 11 and has already drawn as many tags as me. Lol

I saw the write up on that guys hunt from a couple years ago and have been reading it over and over. What a cool experience, definitely getting my daughter and I even more excited than we already were. Glad to hear it sounds like I'm on the right track of where I'm wanting to concentrate most of my efforts. Definitely am still open to all suggestions though! It is interesting how the draws work out sometimes. I know a few people with 20+ points who have never never drawn. I'm definitely not going to complain how it worked out this year though.
