Umtanum late archery cow tag
« on: July 08, 2023, 06:55:34 AM »
Got lucky and pulled the late archery cow tag for this unit. Have not hunted 342 in 15 years. Posted on the ELK message board with no response hoping to get some info on the archery board. Going to start looking around the area. The last time I hunted the area was with a muzzle loader around the feed station area. Any help on where to start looking in the unit would be great. Oh, by the way I will be turning 70 so please take that in consideration. Thanks for your help.

Had a buddy with that tag last year, he didn’t punch it. I live close to the area so if you need help hauling one out feel free to get ahold of me but I haven’t spent much time up there so I don’t have any advice. My grandpa had a moose tag last year and I couldn’t get any help on here but ran into a lot of friendly faces in the woods. I wish you luck!

It is a fun tag. You will see plenty of elk. The problem is most of that unit has been burnt up by fire in recent years so it is wide open. They have opened up too many roads into the unit that was only walk in before and the road hunting Quad/ side by side guys run the elk ragged.  Look for broken cover away from the roads and hope for a little luck. I’m sure you will see elk, it’s the getting close enough that is going to be the problem.
