Little non-typical blacktail
« on: June 04, 2009, 07:38:47 PM »
Caught this little guy, it'll be kind of fun to see what that crooked horn turns out to be.

I am a little bummed though, I found this neat little spot last winter so I bushwhacked a 1/2 mile trail through the reprod, dug up the area and planted some clover.  I told my wife that no one would ever stumble into this area and find my camera.  Man was I wrong, a couple horsemen found my trail, opened it up wide enough for a jeep and ride it every day.  My regular elk pictures I was getting every day are now about once a week.  :bash:  Guess I'll be a little more careful about hiding my entry spot.

I was wondering when you were gonna post some pics of that spot. hopefully that blackie will show himself here and there it will be interesting to see what he does. That sucks about the guys on the horses. also looks like you got a new spot for elk  :chuckle:

How'd your clover do in there?  the last pic shows a lot of hoof traffic keeping things matted down.  On cutting your trail into that spot, it's best to leave the first 5 yards or so untouched, then you can open it up good as long as there is no visibility into the brush.  I once had a trail that I cleared right off the nose of a ridge along a clear cut edge.  You'd had to look for it to find it.  Well, within a week there were pop cans and candy wrapper strewn all the way down to my treestand  :bash:  Lesson learned.
