Newport for late season

Headed to a place called Marshall Lake Resort just out of Newport for the late muzzleloader season. This is the first time to that area. Anyone have some advice? We hunted near Ione last year.

Alot of deer up that way, try the back side of Bead Lake and No name lake as well. Lots of critters running throughout.

Lots of big ones running around.  Better be a good shot and have quick reflexes though.  they don't stand around long.

Like some have said in prior messages, be very still and patient.  Scent seems to be pretty key also.  They should be rutting pretty hard now and weather should have them moving.  Good luck!

They are rutting very hard.  Not responding well to rattling, but some.  They are running all over.  Get to s pot and let them do the moving.

in that area there's alot of private land and it's pretty close to Idaho so be sure where you are. A friend who owns property up that way tells me to come up and go elk hunting with him and he didn't even know which state he was in.

They should be rutting pretty hard now and weather should have them moving.

sometimes in that situation you be better off posting yourself on a well-used trail and let them come to you.

They are running all over.  Get to spot and let them do the moving.

Near Bead Lake North of Newport, my Dad walked into an area that had always been posted "Walk in Only" in past years.  This year there was no posting at all.  When he got to the end of the road he was surprised to see a couple of huge feeders with timers.  He thought they were maybe 100 gallon containers.  A man yelled to him from a fortress propped up in the air several feet.  The man came over and told my Dad that it was private property. 

My Dad said no problem We won't hunt here anymore.  I didn't even know it was legal but after talking with some locals I here it is common practice to unload a truck full of alfalfa just before archery season.

We hunted about a half mile away from the folks with the feeders and over a 4 day period heard a lot of shootin' in that area near the feeders.  They had a lot better success then we did.  We only saw a few does and decided to hunt elsewhere.

I'm pretty sure hunting over bait for deer would be less than legal in washington, public or private land.

Hunting deer or elk over bait is still legal in this state.  Baiting bears isnt.  I know a couple of outfitters who cheat with alfalfa.  It works but it aint right in my book.  It will be made illegal within a couple of years I'm sure.
