Updates on Olympia commission meeting and the petition
« on: October 06, 2023, 05:24:24 PM »
Hello everyone, its Dane from the Conservation Coalition of Washington. I hope everyone is having a good season so far and enjoying our state’s outdoors. I wanted to make everyone aware about some major upcoming changes and progress on the petition. First, the October commission meeting will be the last in-person commission meeting of the year and the next meeting (over zoom) won’t be until December towards Christmas. October is going to be a meeting where we need to make a stand, because its going to be our last chance for a while to make one in-person. In September, Chair Baker expressed that the policy cannot be voted on in October and instead will be delayed to December. Many commissioners were not at all happy with this and wanted to vote on it immediately, which should tell you how they feel. We personally expect it to be voted on in the timespan of December-January. This works very well for us because it prevents commissioners from making rash decisions or ignoring the public response and gives more time to get rid of the policy or even completely rewrite it.

The October meeting will still be massive regardless, the Black bear CR-102 will have a hearing and a wolf petition from anti-hunting groups will be voted on. If accepted, it will prohibit the killing of wolves across the state. Antis are rallying for this meeting and we need to show up. We have a pint night planned on October 27th at Dick’s Brewing Company in Centrialia after the Friday meeting. You will want to be in Olympia by 8am and no later if you can. Currently, the meeting will occur at the Natural Resource building but their is a small chance it could be changed to a different venue in Olympia to accommodate for the public. Though this is unlikely to happen, we will keep you posted. We will present the petition to the commissioners. Also, legislators are now paying attention. We need to call and write to them, we will need support from them. When the legislature resumes, their will be a push by anti-hunting groups to change the department’s mandate and we need to start getting involved with our state’s congress. I don’t like it but we need to do everything we can.

I want to let folks know, we are not going away after October. We are just getting started. Big things are coming, this preservation policy is not the end. If we don’t stay involved or stay informed we will lose everything. The fight is just beginning and its time for all traditional stakeholders to unite or we are going to lose. I will be sending out another load of petitions soon out to folks who are interested so let me know if you want to help get signatures. Its been going very well so far so thank you everyone who has helped us out!! Let us know what cities and businesses you plan to cover. These are all of the confirmed places we have covered. Hope to see you guys in-person in Olympia, this is our last chance until 2024. We’re not giving up, we’re just getting started!! Petitions must be sent in by October 23rd and send them to PO Box PO box 796 Oak Harbor 98277

If you're in Grays Harbor, swing by Mainline maintenance in Hoquiam. We have the petition here.

I'm not on here much, so I apologize if I'm just not seeing what we're supposed to do to help on this.

Can someone please post a concise list of email addresses or online petitions to sign, or somehow list how we can help?

I'm in Spokane and can't attend the meeting, but I want to send emails or sign petitions or do whatever possible.

Thank you

Are there any places in the Oak Harbor or Burlington areas to sign the petition?

There is a copy at Riverside Archery in Mount Vernon, signed it last week.

I'd be surprised if there wasn't one in Skagit Arms or Holiday Sports.  Otherwise, check Greens or North Whidbey Sportsman's club.

Petitions were dropped off at Old Skagit gun Club, Holiday sports Skagit arms,, and they will have some at Twin City Sportsmen at the WWAmeeting tonight.
In archery we have something like the way of the superior man. When the archer misses the center of the target, he turns round and seeks for the cause of his failure in himself.

I live in Oak Harbor.  Send me a PM and I can get you hooked up.

One does not hunt in order to kill; on the contrary, one kills in order to have hunted. If one were to present the sportsman with the death of the animal as a gift he would refuse it. What he is after is having to win it, to conquer the surly brute through his own effort and skill with all the extras that this carries with it: the immersion in the countryside, the healthfulness of the exercise, the distraction from his job. ~ Jose Ortega y Gasset
