D40?

 Thinking of the Nikon D40 next month, any reviews on this one, good or bad?

Good camera.

 Especially for wildlife? Are there any other good wildlife cams I should consider in that price range? About the only other one's I've seen in that range are the Canon EOS and a couple Pentax models.

something odd about that camera...i think the d40 lenses are the only lenses that will work on that camera...opposed to a canon, say where a canon's a canon's a canon.
regular nikon lenses don't work on a d40 body.

If it were me, I'd get an older model canon like the XTi and save the extra cash for a nice lens or two. That's the general philosophy I picked up when I researched a nice camera for my wifey. 

However, if you have the chance to fondle the two and for whatever reason a Nikon seems more intuitive and comfortable with you, you should absolutely go with what works.

It is on special for Father's Day at Camera World and Ritz Camera.  It comes with 2 telephoto lenses, gadget bag, two instructional CDs, etc..... .for 599.00.  300.00 off regular price.  Heard it on the Radio today.

Could always go to a d80 and be another generation newer without as much price.  or...go 40D Canon instead

You're about 50% right There's two basic kinds of Nikon autofocus lenses. Lenses with the AF-S designation have internal focus motors, and the camera body sends the lens the proper focus info via the terminals... AF Lenses without AF-S are called "screwdriver" type lenses because there's a small screwdriver-like bit (and motor) in the camera body, that spins to adjust focus in the lens. The newer, cheaper cameras don't have this, and can only autofocus with AF-S lenses.

Summary: Around half of Nikon's current lenses are AF-S and will work with the D40 (and almost all of the consumer grade zooms are). The D40 just lacks a built-in motor for the older lenses. You can still mount any other Nikon lens, you just have to manually focus. For 99% of consumers, this isn't really an issue.
