Trap modification question?
« on: February 07, 2024, 07:08:31 PM »
So to the old timers on here that got to enjoy real trapping at one point I have a question for you. I picked up a half dozen Duke 850 pro cast jaw traps, 8.5” outside jaw spread, they are OS. Really a great wolf trap for the price, even better when you get them in a trade. They also make them for beaver trapping with closed jaws.

My question, I’m wanting to make these beaver traps, since the jaws are cast I can’t weld them. I was thinking of wrapping both sides with wire to close the OS gap.

Thoughts? Other ideas to get them beaver ready? I’ve taken quite a few beaver with 1/4” OS traps but the gap on these is 3/8”. Worried without closing the gap at least a little I’ll get twist outs or even a pull outs if it’s a front foot catch.
If you shoot the first one you will never get that true trophy.

Honestly just take hockey tape tape and wrap them as tight as you want , works great
Shorten those chains to about 8” for your slide cable or rod

If you wanted a permanent fix you can drill and add a bar in there but I think being cast it might weaken the jaws and crack them

No I don’t want to mess with cast. The wrap will work freak on beaver 😂
