Can someone tell me where this "Desert" unit 290 is?
« on: June 14, 2024, 12:13:12 PM »
Well after nearly 3 decades of faithfully applying I finally pulled a quality deer tag.  Desert early archery.  It's the complete opposite of a slam dunk big buck but I'm excited for the challenge.  I've got 20 or so days penciled in for scouting between now and Sept 1 so hopeful I can turn up something.

I'd love to chat with anyone that has some experience in this unit, especially early.  I've hunted it quite a bit for waterfowl and coyotes but no boots on the ground since 2015 or so.

The goal is an exceptional buck and I'm willing to throw the tag into the ever growing pile of unpunched mule deer tags in pursuit of him. Scouting officially starts tomorrow.

If you loved elk as much as you do mule deer, I’d give you GPS cord of a big buck. But, you hate elk so…..

Definitely an ice cold pepsi when that buck hits the tailgate.....well it'll be an ice cold pepsi even if one doesn't hit the tailgate if we're being honest  :chuckle:  It'll be 20 years for me on July 19th.

I've been along on a few hunts over the years in there at that time.  Be prepared for big mosquitos if you are anywhere near water.  They suck, literally!  Shoot me a PM and I can tell you what I know.  May or may not be much help?  Good luck on your hunt!

Do not leave valuables or items of importance in your truck as they may not be there when you come back, it's been terrible for that around here lately.

I drive the unit twice daily, and have been on 6-7 hunts with other tag holders. Exceptional will be difficult, (depending on your definition), but not impossible. There are a lot of people who will tell you 170" is about max, but that is not the case. 180+ deer don't just hang out in plain view, even when they are rutting.

This is my first post on HW, but I will help out with anything you want help with.

Congrats Karl.
If you treat this hunt like your dall sheep hunt........A big buck will most likely be taking a dirt nap :chuckle:
