Ryderwood Cow Tag
« on: June 21, 2024, 03:03:42 PM »
I drew Ryderwood (GMU 530) cow tag as my 3rd option and unfortunately have never set foot in the unit.

I have family in Kelso and was planning on staying with them a few weekends in aug-sep and driving up to the area to poke around there instead of the alpine for bear this year just to get more comfortable with the landscape. For anybody familiar with the unit, would it be more worthwhile to get an access pass and drive / hike and glass, or to knock on doors in the valleys trying to get access ahead of the season? What are the herds in the valley typically doing during the late season (nov-dec)? Any advice on chasing bears in August, aside from hitting clearcuts and walking logging roads looking for berries and sign?

I'd get a walk in permit from Weyerhaeuser for $125. It would at least give you a little more area to hunt. There's only 13 left.

Tough hunt, when 506/530 were OTC for antlerless I’d go on the years I didn’t tag out in September. Tons of elk, but hard to close that gap with all those eyes.

I think that’s the biggest thing I need to figure out. I’m pretty confident I could put boot miles in and find herds. I just don’t know if I can do it fast / often enough to overcome things going wrong trying to close the distance to <50 yards. Lots of cows are easy to spook and I’ll probably need to try it a few times before I get it right.

It’s a tough deal, I was in elk multiple times every day last year for the late hunt. In the timber, in the cuts, caught them feeding and bedding. Just couldn’t close the gap with all those eyes looking. Wind switching, getting picked off by a sentry I didn’t see, it’s a chess game. It’s a lot of fun, with a muzzy tag it would be a slam dunk.
