3 days spearfishing, 3 lingcod
« on: June 16, 2009, 05:57:17 PM »
Geno and I hit the ling spearfishing hard the last 3 days.  It was 3 fun days of spear fishing.  Started out Saturday and I shot a decent 30" ling right off the bat.  We surface and drop the ling off at the boat.  Then Geno and I dropped down to 70 feet.  We were diving a rock wall with some caves.  We got out flashlights and started checking caves.  Geno spots a huge ling in the cave.  The ling went about 45-48" and heavy.  He battled the whole way up like big ling do.

Sunday I could only go out in the morning and Geno could only go out in the afternoon.  We decided to split up and dive separately.  I took 2 tank dives and finally located a 35" ling that went 20 lbs.  His orange head was way back in a cave and a long shot and some tugging got him out of his hole.

Yesterday was the last day of the season.  After work we hit a dive spot and dropped down looking for ling.  We tried on a longer dive to locate some but all I could find was a smaller ling to tag.  Geno missed a big one that got away and passed on some smaller lings.  All in all it was a decent season.  Looks like I need to go to Canada if I want any more lings this year...

I'm not the guy with instructor on his dive card Longtat.   ;)  It takes more than just getting certified and going.  You gotta have some experience.  It's not easy searching caves and battling big lings at 80 feet.  Nobody climbs everest as their first mountain.  When you shoot a big 4 foot plus ling they get pissed.  They will bite and thrash you.  I've had them knock my mask off and my regulator out of my mouth.  It can be like ling wrestling at times.   :P

Lingcod and beer are two of my favorites Geno!   :brew:

I'm not done for the year.  I am going to Canada for more toothy lings in about a month.  Pictures to come...

Visibility on the surface and top 10 feet was about 5 foot.  Not good.  But below that it opened up and most of the weekend it was about 30 foot visibility.  Not the best but very good for around here.
