Update/SPOT Device
« on: June 18, 2009, 11:11:49 AM »
Well I have been VERY happy with my SPOT device, that is until Sunday night.  I was coming back from Hamilton Montana and left I-90 at the Taft exit and headed over and down into Loop Creek in Idaho.  Got to the bottom, right along Loop Creek which spills into the North Fork of the St. Joe River.  Got to the bottom and the brake pedal went all the way to the floor.   :yike:    Anyways I parked at a campsite and tried calling my wife to let her know where I was and had no cell service.  So I tried sending several "ok" messages, but nothing got out since the device could not aquire our location.  Later that eveing I moved to a wide open area along the NF of the St. Joe River and tried sending the messages again and still it was not able to aquire our locations.  That has me worried a little bit as this is one of the areas I like to ride my mules and is one of the areas I got the device for.  I'll try and do some more testing next weekend over there while I'm bear hunting.

I have been happy with mine, BUT I have been reading some bad reviews on other websites lately.

I got one for my B-day last week. Actually I have not recieved it as mom said she got me one and I just need to go with her to Cabelas and pick it up with her.

My buddy has one and has not had any problems with it. I'm sure the long the service is out the better it will get. like many new technologys.

I've had one for a year+.  I've used it in S. Idaho, Western and Eastern WA, and Central OR.  The only place that I"ve had an issue was in the big trees in the W.O. Douglas Wilderness.  The service was spotty, but when I broke out into the open, it acquired a signal within ten minutes.  That is slow by GPS standards, but a reality with SPOT.

I don't know why, but I'm still getting service after the one year anniversary and I only paid for one year of service when I signed up.  I keep waiting for an email that says I need to pay again.  The device keeps working...

I have had one for a few weeks now. I like it. I have used it for scouting. I get out on a point and hit the ok button and can go home and check it with google earth and see where I was and look for old roads in the erea. I havn't been scouting my erea for animals as I'm trying to find the erea I want to hunt and figure out the best ways to get meat out. This has been a very handy tool in just a few weeks of owning it!! I will use it for scouting for my bull in September when they are talking and I know what holes I want to hunt.
