Aggressive deer
« on: June 22, 2009, 10:12:33 AM »
Got up early, loaded up my Mountain bike, shotgun, and calls and headed up to the woods.  It was a perfect day for riding and hunting.  Got to a gated road on Weyerhauser land.  No other cars had the entire area to myself.  Made my first stand about a mile in.  Let the home made e-caller run for about twenty minutes...nothing.  Went to the new calls from Bearmanric.  Sounded real good and loud but still nothing.  Got up slowly (like I always do) gather up all my gear and started walking up the road to check a blind spot I could not see from my stand but thought I heard some breaking limbs from there.  Got there and heard something in the brush.  Watched for a bit, turned out to be a big ol' doe.  She must have been there the whole time.  I was standing on the side of the road but was hidden from her by a large brush pile.  For fun I thought I would see how she would react if I blew some fawn distress on the call.  Well she reacted like I thought.  She started stomping and blowing and running back and forth never getting closer than about 40 yards.  While enjoying the show I heard something running up the road at me.  It was a young buck.  I was in plain sight to him but was camo'd out head to toe.  He got about 30 yards and started pawing the ground and thrashing his head.  I blew the call again and he charged forward to about 20 yard.  He was pissed.  I was just standing there in plain view so I reached for my camera and snap a couple pictures of him.  He didnt mind me moving but seemed to calm down a little.  Eventually he started moving back up the road.  He even stopped to scratch his chin with his back leg.  Not scared at all.  Well I had the camera out and wanted to get him charging me on video.  So I started blowing the call again.  He came back but not with the aggression he had before.  Looked back to see where the doe had gone she was still there but had went back to eating.   :dunno:

All in all I called in 5 deer and one unknown.  Saw 1 coyote sitting on a stump but the wind was wrong and he busted me just as I saw him.  Put about 8 miles on the bike plus about another mile in hiking.  Got home to a homemade fathers day card from my three year old and a lasagna dinner with a an ice cold beer.  Very enjoyable fathers day.

Great write-up.  Sounds like a quality day in the woods.

Went out again on Friday.  Same story lots of deer came running but no coyotes.  I did see a pup walking down the road.  Cute little bugger, his head seemed about two sizes to big for his body and he was alone.  Stayed out till dark and heard lots of howling so I know there were coyotes, I just didnt get them to come play.

Was just thinking over the last couple of trips to this area (Yacolt Burn area).  Lots of really defensive/aggressive deer and no fawns.  Even had a doe come running to pup distress. I did hear coyotes howling and saw lots of sign.  Im wondering if the fawns are getting hammered.   :dunno:

Also forgot to mention I saw a couple mountain beavers.  I had never seen one before in my life.  I was walking down a road and noticed some grass moving and larger brush falling over.  Moved in for a closer look thinking it might be a rabbit or something when a rodent the size of a rabbit came running at my boot.  I thought it was a nutria but after looking at pictures I am sure it was a mountain beaver.  Cant believe I have never even hear of one or seen one until now.
