Fishing estate collection

I’m going to go look at a fishing gear estate collection today. The daughter told me to make her a lowball offer, as they would just like the collection gone. I should have asked for some pictures before going, but I didn’t. Does anyone have an idea what a general rule of used gear value might be? Such as 30%-50% of new price. Obviously depending on what kind of shape. Or such as 20% fair, 30% good etc?

I would think it really depends, is the stuff 1 year old or 50?  Chances are you are going to have a difficult time finding prices for a bunch of random things unless it's really out of the ordinary.  I would probably just pick a number my gut said was fair if I was interested in it.

Are you looking to buy as a collector or as a user?  If you're buying as a user you probably have a pretty good idea of what various gear costs and its really only a good price, even if it's cheap, if it's something you'll actually use.  If you're like most of us you probably already have a lot of fishing gear that you never really use. If you're buying to collect its a tough call if you haven't already done your homework, which is tough to do when you don't know what's in the collection. I hate going to those things because I always seem to find a couple things I can't resist to add to my never use pile.

I think, heavy emphasis on think, I have most everything I need. It’s a client of my wife and they are very wealthy. I think the house is worth around 4 mil, in Medina. So, I was thinking there might be some high end gear that I could get a good deal on and pass the savings on to members here on Hunt Wa. if I don’t want it. They just really want it gone, but to somebody who could use it as opposed to tossing or Good Will.

I think you will find used market values all over the place. It's highly dependent on the individual items. Old, like actually considered collectible is valuable. Old, worn-out or out-dated gear is hard to give away. Newer stuff that people use around here in good shape will likely be worth 50%+ of new. I've seen older GLoomis/Sage/etc. fly rods go for near new prices. So yeah, really depends on what you run across.

Quite honestly the prices are all over the board on fishing gear. I have/had old collectable gear go for way more than I thought it would and new/newer stuff goes for anywhere between 30-50% of new cost depending on availability and use. For example I have bought spinners in lots for $1.50 each that sell in stores for $5-$7 each.

Some lures are expensive and some cheap.. The first one above sold for around $100..the bottom frog lure --if confirmed authentic --could sell for hundreds. If it is a first edition lure from the early 1900's. This post has several beaters and the bottom one is a novelty lure. ($100)    Hope this helps...I have pics of rods, reels , and other fishing stuff.

Looks like mostly older stuff. Primarily fly fishing. Orvis, Sage Tabor, Lamiglass, Abu Garcia. I will go through it in the next few days with more pics and details. It’s a lot of stuff

I have spent $8,000 on one collection and quite a while ago I bought out the fishing store in Lake Conconelly for $10,000...That one have over 500 reels and other stuff.

Wow, that second pic is certainly a relic! There's a whole other group of collectors that collect that kind of stuff.

Beautyful agate guides, I've got a few old rods with them.
