Any Midwest Hunters?
« on: April 03, 2025, 09:13:08 AM »
A couple of questions for the hunters who hunt the Midwest states. What are the logistics of your hunt? Are you flying out or driving?

Thanks,
B

I hunt Illinois, fly into St. Louis Lambert Airport, rent a vehicle and drive to my dads.  Most of my gear goes in my gun case with weapon and ammo.  Carry on optics and non hunting clothing.  Plan on butchering, vac sealing and freezing meat.  I then pack it in shipping coolers that I got off amazon. Load that in roller duffle and keep total weight under 50 lbs/each.  Large buck took 2 duffels last time. Cost me under $200 to fly it back with gun case.  I have also had it processed and then shipped by my dad.  That was more expensive, but it was summer sausage, burger and hot cheddar sticks.

I'm interested in this too, as much as I love western hunting it seems like midwest whitetail are going to be the best OTC opportunities going forward.

More than a few of the states are draw applications for non-resident, to include archery. My deer tags are slightly cheaper than Wyoming, and some states also do bonus points. Over the Counter tags are after the draws and start in September for archery, October for the firearm season. But you have to purchase in person, which is a PIA. Iowa has draw tags and then you might have to draw access to public land. Illinois has special refs for some public land hunt area. Missouri seems pretty liberal with hunting opportunities but a lot of land is private and leased to groups.I haven’t really looked into Indiana or Ohio but I feel they are similar. Kentucky has been on my radar for a bit but I haven’t checked on things since 2019.
