Burrowing Animal
« on: May 27, 2025, 12:26:38 PM »
Hey everyone,,

Just curious to what you guys think may be making these tunnels into my yard. I put an energy can next to the hole for size reference. They are all throughout my front yard and lead towards my basement but I have traps set in the basement for rats and mice and have yet to catch anything.

I tried gassing the tunnels but since they burrow into my basement it filled my basement. Any ideas will help thanks.

This will cure the issue. But the do Gooders will inform you they are illegal to use.

Just keep you thumb out of the way.

Not seeing any dirt on the outside of the hole. Here is a different hole.

They amaze me , because there is no dirt. One of the mysteries of nature.

They will haul dirt and fill a bucket turned upside down. Or anything else.

Vole.
Easy to catch. Set a mouse trap in front of hole. No bait on trap. Get the trap with the yellow treadle, not the copper one. Attach a string to your trap so a cat or other varment doesn’t drag off your trap.

I need you to come show me how.  :dunno: I am death on moles and totally eliminate them, but I have NEVER been able to trap a vole no matter which of the internet devices and advice I have used.  Poison is the only thing that has worked for me, and I am assuming it kills voles because they devour the poison but I never have found a dead one.

I get a kick out of the way voles fill a mole trap with dirt without setting it off.

I left a couple small tweaks to the system out. As I figure everyone profits by slowing down, getting humbled by a rodent with a brain the size of a bb. Until they start paying attention and let the rodent show them how to catch them. Not all skills are instant gratification.
That said, I also think there is some confusion between a mole, pocket gopher, and vole. They are all different animals, and work their respective environments in completly different ways. For different pay offs.

Most of my volts just move into old mole runs, so they are not digging just redecorating  :chuckle:

Think this is why no dirt many times.  Have tried empty traps and had no real success, just an occasional trap triggered.

Much harder to rid than moles.  But if you have a mole I think they run off the voles from that little area
In God we trust, all others bring cash.

Do not say, Why were the old days better than these? For it is not wise to ask such questions.
