Buck age
« on: Yesterday at 02:56:16 PM »
Reading about deer ages on here reminded me to check my tooth results from 22. Any of the experts care to give it a rip?

The thing I've come to realize after starting to have deer aged is its a blind guess. Anyone that tries to speak with authority on deer age just from looking at a buck on the hoof is fooling themselves, me included :chuckle:
It is foolish and wrong to mourn these men.  Rather, we should thank god that such men lived.  -General George S. Patton

Im not so sure Karl! Wait for this thread to develop and im sure the experts will emerge I mean just look at that thing. Picture doesn't do it justice. At least 400 pounds on the hoof, roman nose, and just a pure ghost gray coat. Easily 190 typical frame. Look at those burly bases. All the tell tale signs. What yall think? Cmon now!

Normally, your spikes and little forkys are 1.5 year olds. Your standard Washington “legal” 3x3 and dinky 4x4’s are 2.5 year olds. After that, it can be tough guessing. I’ve seen bucks that I would guess are 3.5 year olds turn out to be a couple of years older. I have also seen deer I thought were old and over 5.5 year olds end up being 3.5 and 4.5 year olds.  But if I had to guess I would say he is one year either side of 4.5 years old. Maybe the picture doesn’t do it justice but my guess on the score would be in the 140’s-150’s range.

It’s a trap. Just cause your asking I will guess 2.5 YO and if you didn’t ask I would have guessed 3.5 YO.

I think your pretty close. Bases are decent but the mass doesn’t carry to the top end.
