After a couple years of poor health,...
« on: Yesterday at 11:06:52 AM »
I'll be getting back in the woods in September. I'm in the gym a couple days a week, walking everyday and increasing distance gradually, counting food nutrients and calories, have a dedicated boomer trainer. 4 past bouts with cellulitis, resulting in leg swelling like crazy, cause me to stop exercising. A keto diet wasn't helping me either. I was drinking two to three doubles every night and I've cut way back on my drinking, having only three measured drinks a week for the last month and never on the night before a weight training. Upper body only, as my left hip is starting to sing. Testosterone therapy, protein and creatine supplements, liver supplement, fruits, vegetables, berries, salads, lean and high protein meat - turkey breast, pork loin, beef, chicken breast. Wife doesn't like fish and that sucks.

I may not get back to my previous shape or stamina, as I'm approaching 68 this year. But, I'm tired of watching videos of elk screaming and not doing anything to be able to hear them first hand.

If anyone wants to add an old man to their camp here on the wet side, I can cook my butt off, know my wild mushrooms, and will do my share of clean-up. Here's to September and the Elk Woods!

Can't help with the hunting side of things but glad to hear the health is turning for the better. Well balanced meals, quality sleep, move the body consistently and you will only get better and better. Good luck!

So glad to hear you're doing well John!

Health truly isn't rocket science. Theres always some new fad out there but at the end of the day, single ingredient foods, sleep, avoid elk hunting, no alcohol, and exercise is the way and will always be the way. I recommend a steady diet of mule deer hunting as well

Good for you P-man
I used to get frustrated with people that would complain about how poorly they felt but would, in the next sentence, say something like "I'm not giving up my whiskey and cigarettes".
Less food, better quality food, staying away from processed sugar and as much exercise as you can tolerate is usually beneficial for most people.
May the woods welcome you back with a bountiful harvest.

Thanks for the moral support, all. I feel better even after only a month.

For anybody that reads this thread, you should know that P'Man is a serious dude when it comes to food.  You probably couldn't find a better addition to your hunting camp if you added him for that.

Can he hunt?  I have no idea.  Better for you if he can't!   :chuckle:

What a great offer, the camp cook is one of the hardest roles in a camp to fill and is one of the most important

Side thought, have you ever considerd cooking for an outfitter in exchange for some hunting ?
