Fullsized Truck Opinion: HiMiNew vs LoMiOlder
« on: July 10, 2025, 04:52:29 PM »
I’m looking to flip my 30yo OBS powerstroke into a newer, late model, quieter, more car-like interstate driving 3/4 ton.

I could pour money into “Ike” and make it into a modern version of a ‘96, but that just doesn’t feel right to me.

Perusing the market, both in gassers and diesels, I am seeing two clear options:

Option 1: Newer, maybe 5-7 yo trucks in my price range with around 300k on them.

Option 2: Older, maybe 10-15 yo trucks in my price range with under 10k per year on them.

Which would you lean towards, and why?

Low miles.

Simply beciase in my limited experience I have picked up some low mileage older trucks that were awesome values.

Can’t afford to have both.

1/2 ton. Wife has one, I like it. But we have occasional need for a 3/4 or 1 ton.

I have a 2012 f350 6.7 with 105,000 on it I would take it any day over a 2020 with 300,000. They were making nice trucks 10-15 years ago and the power it has stock is plenty for whatever you want to pull  What’s your price range?

How often is occasional?  It can get pretty expensive to need a big truck a couple times a year.

Yeah the (only) occasional need for a big truck is a factor. Might look into adjustable airbags on a half ton to see if it’s realistic. RV trailer is 31’ but the wife’s 1500 hemi handles it pretty good, just kinda get shoved around a bit. Thinking about a dump trailer for my 5000# tractor as a side hustle or kid business. Have an enclosed car hauler… but never use it to speak of. Got rid of the giant 5th wheel…. Definitely a thought.

Price range this round is probably mid teens.

Prolly less wear and tear and a lot of highway miles on a lomi older truck.

I've got my lomi 2001 Ram 3500 Cummins DRW.  I'd have a hard time talking myself into a diesel that required DEF, CAT, DPF and got 15 mpg when the Godzilla motor does the same.  IMHO they've hung so much emission on modern diesels the value is gone.

My buddy just picked up a 26' RV with the Godzilla and got 12.5 to Minnesota and back.  And he's long been a believer in diesels with Rams from Gen 1 thru Gen 3.

When you’re talking any of the big 3 3/4 ton and 1 ton trucks, please remember to consider stuff other than the engine. A Dodge or Ford Super Duty front end will be worn out 2-3 times by the time a truck hits 300k. Get a good solid independent inspection done before purchase. I have offhand a customer with ~500k on a super duty and another customer I actually spoke to yesterday with 350k on his super duty. Both are going strong on original engines and transmissions but they’ve spent thousands of dollars in other stuff.

One of my primary reasons for not putting resto-building money into “Ike” is I need a four door… but that one is a very tempting option!
