Most people I know with a modern diesel are using some type of diesel additive to help extend the life of the CP4 pump.  As to what everyone is using, well, that appears to be one of those ask ten people get ten different answers kind of things.  I've had people tell me they use ATF, 2 stroke oil, Marvel Mystery Oil, to a wide variety of the different specific diesel fuel treatments.

The last diesel pickup I had was a 6.0 I sold 10+ years ago but now that I do again it seems to be common practice to run some kind of fuel treatment mostly to help lubricate the CP4 pump.

If you have a diesel and you're using a fuel treatment what are you using?  I've only got 700 miles on my 6.7 so far but I started out using Archoil 6500 but I may switch to Amsoil diesel fuel treatment after I use up this Archoil stuff I bought.

I've used Archoil for years with no complaints....In both Powerstroke and Duramax.

I have a 6.7 powerstroke with the notorious cp4 pump. I have used it a handful of times but not much. I won’t buy anymore I think it’s all hype. If you look at the actual failure rate is so minimal it’s most likely a non issue. My truck has 280k miles on the stock cp4. Either way, with that said I was using hotshots EDT when I would use it. I did put a S & S diesel disaster prevention kit on my truck, just in case.

I put a bottle in with every fill up, especially when in small towns.  I buy a big bottle and fill up the smaller ones and keep them in my truck.  I have an 06 gmc duramax, runs like a champ!! (Knock on wood).

I use the same stuff as @trophyhunt in my '06 6.0 Ford, and use the same "big jug / small bottles" method.  *Almost* every fill up .  No CP4 concerns on my rig, but I hear they're known to have a few of their own minor problems  :chuckle:

In addition, I also add Sea foam to my tank and engine after every oil change.

Great video.

This what I’ve always used in my 2004 Ram Cummings. Bought brand new with 4 miles on it, now it has 252,187 still running great.

Recently was thinking about changing to Archoil though.

I'll have to go back and find it but I watched a video, I think it may have been by Lake Speed Jr, where they tested a handful of different popular diesel additives specifically for how they helped with wear in the CP4 pump.  Archoil 6500 wasn't the best but it faired pretty well.  If I recall that HotShots stuff didn't do all that well and the one that did the best cost substantially more and you used something like twice as much of it as most of the others.  The Amsoil stuff wasn't part of the test but everything I've read about their diesel fuel treatment has them as one of the better ones to use.  I could be overthinking it, I often do, but considering what these stupid things cost I'd rather be on the safe side so I plan to run something I'm just not 100% on which one.

I see no draw back with using additives, but if I had a cp4, I would 100% have a lift pump, my son in law has a cp4 in his 2015, I’ve beat it into him to buy a pump but he insists it’s not needed!!! There are people that have had no problems with the cp4, but far too many that have.  We all know certain years have issues, that new 10 speed tranny has a known issue, cp4’s in before 2020.  I have yet to find an issue with the 06 models, I wish they would stick to what works!!! Sorry, off subject, just had to vent.

L5P here, no CP4. Pretty sure GM dropped the use of the CP4 after the LML. I use the amsoil additive regularly (the injector clean + cetane boost variety).

I've been using OptiLube in my VP44 pumped Cummins.  Way back I researched and it came out with high marks with some actual lab testing.  It was one of the more economical ones that did.

2012 deleted Cummins and never used an additive, and have no issues.
210k miles currently.  I’m nervous of changing my routine but can be convinced too if worth it.
Religiously Oil and filter every 5k, fuel filter every 10k.
Do I need to start using an additive?

Project farm on YouTube probably has a video on this. He tests everything else.

I use Diesel Service off and on in a 2001 ram and a 2011 ram. They seem to run better with it. I use minimum recommended.

This use this if I am going to be in town. If I am traveling or running to St Helen's scouting, I don't even worry about. Basically, if fuel is going to be in the tank a while, I treat it.

Choose a brand, run it, if it improves your MPG's then decide if it's worth it.

Whenever our 2002 duramax with 360k starts smoking hard I dump some diesel dr down it for two or three tanks and it will quit smoking for a while. Stuck injectors common.
