Idaho Moose Tag Area 1-1 Hunt 3001
« on: August 11, 2025, 10:42:50 PM »
Well the hunting gods smiled again and I finally drew my Idaho moose tag. :IBCOOL: I am starting this thread just to keep track for myself and friends and for anyone else who wants to tag along. The hunt runs from Sept 15 - Dec 1. I am headed over this weekend just to look around and get a lay of the land. My dad, who just turned 83, will be tagging along with me this weekend so it will be more of a exploratory journey than anything else. I was thinking of bringing over my side by side by am unsure. I plan on doing at least one more scouting trip with the main hunt taking place Oct 2nd through Oct 14th and if I don't get anything coming back in November. If any body has areas or access points I am more the happy to listen to any and all suggestions. I appreciate any and all help and will be updating this as it plays out.

So first scouting trip is in the books. No moose were located but a lot of tracks and sign. Seen more bear crap than I have seen in my life. One road we went down had crap every two hundred yards and berries everywhere. Overall a very successful trip learned some areas and met some people and had a great time with my dad.

You can find moose anywhere from the elevations of Sundance Lookout to the river  bottoms. Just keep looking. Good luck.

So after making it home and getting caught up with work and then leaving for Maui for ten days I am finally getting a chance to write the story of my Idaho moose hunt.

I made it over two times to scout and get the lay of the land and overall I really enjoyed the area and the people I did get a chance to speak with all were very friendly.

First time we went over it was very wet and overcast but identified some areas and seen some animals

On the day to head over we found our first choice for camp spot occupied but the second was open so we set up camp and did some exploring and found this old concrete structure next to Big Creek

Day 4 brought about four bulls sighted and finally tipped one over. This hunt was a ton of fun and getting to spend time with my dad and two brothers was what made it,

We made the classic mistake of shooting the moose below the road, way below the road :bdid:. My dad is 83 and my older brother has a fused back so my younger brother and I took our time but 9 trips later and a ton of liquid IV and gatorade we had it back to camp.

The next three days we spent hunting bears and never could get on one and then the one we did ended up having two cubs but did have a big boar run across the road in front of us, We will be back bear hunting next year and hopefully moose again sometime.

We did find a bra tree which was just creepy :dunno: and after getting home I think we finally concluded the structure was possibly an old smelter of some sort but are not sure
