New Dump Trailers, what do you know?
« on: August 12, 2025, 10:01:21 PM »
Good evening, I looked through the old threads and while still helpful not really a lot of info. I am in the market for a dump trailer, thinking 7 by 14 or maybe 16, 14K plus. I have looked at several in the local area and all are fairly similar and most all are having "sales" currently. The prices I am seeing for used do not strike me as great deals being within a thousand or so of brand new. I am looking at powder coated vs wet paint as it seems all wet paint chips bad and the trailers look awful in a few years. While looks are not the selling point for an equipment trailer I'd prefer it not look like a rust pile in 3 years.

I am looking serious at Lamar, MaxxD and Load Trail currently, anyone have experience and opinions? The MaxxD is a bit more expensive but still in the running at this time. With the discounts they are not offering much for "add ons" at this time so the deals are basically the same. All have 10 ga sides and 7 ga floor, 12" on center supports under the deck, loading supports, 3 way gates, so as close to apples to apples as I can get.

Thanks for any advice and wisdom, if some one knows a dealership with great deals there is no reason  would not drive a few hundred miles to get the right deal.

I have a MaxXD and love it.  Bought it in 2018 and the paint still looks new......quality powder coating is where it's at.  I upgraded to LED lights, Silicone / winter wiring, Better tires and a spare.......and I wouldn't change a thing.  Mine is a 7'x16.

I've got a lot of buddies that went cheap and their trailers look like garbage now.  Buy once, cry once.....that was my motto when looking.  Crazy thing....I could sell mine today for more than I paid for it.  Prices have skyrocketed on these trailers.

Scissor lift with a big ram in a must.  12" on center cross members is a must (cheap trailers will go 16 or even 16 or even 18 on center.   Heavy gauge floor and side walls are a must....I think the MaxXD is 7ga floor and 10 ga sidewalls.  Drop legs on the rear are a must if you plan on loading equipment in the back.  Heavy ramps that stow is are a must.

What else do you want to know......Again.....I love mine and wouldn't change a thing.

I purchased a 6x12 Maxxd dump trailer in 2020. I researched different brands for a couple of months before pulling the trigger. 90% of trailers are built in West Texas. I narrowed my search down to the two best quality built trailers being Lamar and Maxxd. I ended up going with Maxxd because they had more options for a custom build. I recommend upgrading to the 12" o.c crossmembers. I also upgraded to 2ea 7k axles and rear stabilizer jacks, cold weather wiring, 10k drop leg front jack, desert tan paint, and i got the solar panel trickle charge kit. I am extremely happy with the trailer. I have never had a load that even slows down the lift, and I have loaded it with some wet heavy red fir. I shopped all around the northwest and the best priced place I found was Farm Country sales in Hazelton, Id.

I went with a 5x10 big tex in 2020. I bought the last one in the yard before the covid shortage happened. It was the cheapest option, cheapest paint, and thinnest steel. It is definitely rusty and doesn't have  ramps and only hauls 5k in weight. I work construction and use it for dump runs all the time. It still works great but looks like crap like you said. But for me its perfect and being narrow it gets into all the tight spots I need it to. If I were hauling equipment or gravel it wouldn't work, but being so light I barely notice its there, even behind half ton pickups. Wouldn't trade it for the world.

I have an Iron Bull and it is built a ton better then a lot of the cheaper ones like the BigTex.  I've compared them side by side with buddies who have various brands to my BigTex.  MaxxD is the best built though of all of the dump trialers I've seen.  If you are using it heavy, I would go with the MaxxD, if you need it here and there, I have no problems with my Iron Bull.  Just make sure to replace the tires after the first year you buy it.

Thank you for the responses.
Jrebel, I know exactly what you are saying about the selling today, you got a STEAL on your trailer from what I saw on the other post! Today that trailer would be twice what you paid just a few short years ago. I am very glad to hear that you are so happy with the purchase!
Buckmaster I have the same feelings on the best available trailers today. The Lamar has two back legs which will be important to my uses. But I am sure the MaxxD DJX model would work too, in my area the Lamar is about $3000 cheaper with the sales going on.
Rugergunsite, I agree if I was just hauling garbage and debris the Big Tex would be a great fit. But hauling equipment and logs for the mill I need bigger and with bigger loads I want less risk.
300rum, nothing wrong with the Iron Bull, I just want the powdercoat for our weather. They are only a thousand dollars less than the Lamars.

Thank you all for the info and feedback.

Curious:

Those who have 14k+ trailers...do you have a CDL?

I have a 14k iron bull, so far so good. There was a recall on the 3 way gate that they covered at a local fab shop. Seems to be a pretty stout trailer, Id steer clear of the cheaper ones as mentioned in above post's, they just don't hold up...

You don’t need one.

That depends on if there's a commercial aspect to your tow.

Not all commercial aspects need a CDL.  It is based on weight of loaded trailer and combined vehicle weight of truck and trailer.  Simply having a commercial business that uses a dump trailer does not mean the driver of the towing vehicle needs a CDL…..(at least that is how I read the law).

If you're using the trailer for business, hauling goods, or for-hire transportation, a CDL is likely required if the combined weight of the vehicle and trailer exceeds 26,001 lbs and the trailer's GVWR is over 10,000.

I’m not a commercial use guy so I may be missing something, but I have worked for companies that towed larger trailers and a CDL was not required unless over a certain weight or had air brakes.

I do think of folks are buying these trailers, they should make sure and do their homework to make sure they are applying with the laws.
