Looking for New Areas to Chase Quail?

Putting out and APB for new areas to chase those little feathered Rockets.  I live for hunting these little critters.  Wouldn't mind hooking up with others.  have dogs will travel.

I've never targeted quail specifically. Just ran across the occasional covey while pheasant or chukar hunting. But I see from the harvest report Yakima County has, by far, the highest harvest (26,000.) Chelan County, Douglas County, Okanogan, and Grant County are pretty high in the harvest numbers too. I think you can get into them on the Yakama Indian Res if you purchase the hunting permit. If it were me I'd probably head north and hunt up in Okanogan. I just like the country up there and even a bad day hunting up there would be better than a good day anywhere else.

almost got launched off of a young horse down from my inlaws because of a covey of those little *censored*s. you know where, Ron. don't see too many of them but we see them once in a while.

Not fun have been there too on my horse.  Yeah I was thinking about heading down that way this fall and see what I can find.  It's getting scary hunting on the nation and the lower valley of Yakima.  So many rigs getting busted into and you never know who and or what you'll run into down there. 

If I could get a tag for gangsters I'd hunt down there more often.

Seriously?  I'm tired of hearing people talk bad about the Yakima Valley.  I grew up here, it's really not that bad.  Thats ok though, you chicken *censored*s can stay home. more hunting for me.

my truck got stolen out of yakima sitting in the woods for a grand total of 3 hours by itself 27 miles from anywhere. it was found 3 weeks later stripped and totalled sitting in front of what the kittitas county sheriffs called a crackhouse motel.
there's issues out there with car  theft and break ins. sorry if that hurts your feelings but it's the truth. talk to some cops, insurance and body shop people if you don't believe me.

I got a few secret little spots for quail, chukar, and pheasants, but they require a boat to get to.  The quail are so thick its not uncommon to run into a covey every 100 yds or so

Atleast you don't live IN the city.

The Rez has lots of quail, but I also worry about leaving a truck down there. Unless you can manage to get on some private land.

Seriously guys, I've never been broke into while hunting around yakima.  I've been broke into once when I parked my rig in the bad part of town.  I knew better, but i parked there anyway.  That comment just hit a nerve and rubbed me the wrong way.  Worrying about that kind of stuff has never stopped me from going hunting anywhere.  As for quail hunting, you can find them everywhere around here.

I've been hunting the reservation since '90, just about every weekend, never a problem with the truck! Probably because it usual blends in, my trucks get scratched and dinged pretty quick and I tend to keep them for awhile. I had "warning" shots fired in my general direction, been threatened by a group of inebriated teens and chased off an area by tribal police.(it turned out to open and the officier duly apologized). But dare I say it out loud? Never had a problem at the truck. Actually the tribal police presence has picked up, I'm glad to see it and have to say they have always been professional. They have a web site with good data, a game department that focuses on game, and if you write them they will respond! The scenery can be beautiful, sometimes you might have to squint and since they closed that bar in Brownstown the driving has improved. Its a great place if you learn it, can be ugly sometimes but after the opener its like a big "members club". Now if I can only find some grouse in the open sections, I wouldn't have to drive all the way to the Blue Mt's! P.S. there are some quail there.

Sorry to have struck a nerve ING.  I am a Yakima native. IKE & Perry Grad most of my family still lives there and I hunt a minimum of 30 - 40 days a year on the Rez.  I know it all and I know it well.  Yes there are birds down there and I am sure I have been responsible for reducing the popular.  LOL.  In the last 3 years I have had so many issues and encounters that it kinda takes the fun out of it.  I find at least 1 and sometimes more dead pit bulls from the fighting matches every weekend, *censored* punk ganster wanna be's out for a day of shooting at anything that moves.  The list goes on. 

I will still continue to hunt down there but the reason for the post was to expand my horizons and try to connect with other areas that may hold birds and maybe find a hunting partner or two.

Rhinoron, sounds like your hunting the reservation more towards Yakima.  Head farther south down the river a bit.  Quail all over.  We flush quail 95% of the time when we are jump shooting ducks.  Infact we only shoot at them now when we are on our way back to the pickup.  Ive missed too many opportunities on ducks while shooting at quail.

I love chasin quails around. Fun stuff. good target practice. those things know damn good how to fly and real fast might i add.
