They are bugling. Just before sunrise. If you have early quality tags, get out there and try calling of raking. You just might get a response.

Well we need a thread on that. I don’t think it makes any difference but I am no elk guru. Every year someone says don’t do it ,every year tons of folks do it, and every year guys call in elk after the season starts.   dunno:

Well, if I was holding the quality archery tag for 335, I'd be out there now trying whatever to get a bull to respond. They are in their staging areas and aren't going to travel very far for the next 6 weeks. These bulls are creatures of habit, year after year

If it were me in possession of that tag, I could care less who was hunting behind me

There's a difference between locating elk and working them. Elk hear elk all the time

In a unit with 4 quality tags I personally would not feel a bit bad about being out locating bulls before the season if I had a tag in my pocket
