Tuna!
« on: September 05, 2025, 06:23:11 AM »
Weather and schedule finally aligned and got to take the new boat out for a few tuna runs over labor day weekend.
Been spending the summer fishing for salmon both in the sound and making trips out to westport...but i'd been dreaming of our first tuna trip with the new boat.
Fished Sunday with just my wife, made a 50 mile run SW and got into the tuna.  With just the two of us i decided not to get live bait and so we just trolled and jigged.  Did well, loaded the main fish box, and headed in.  My uncle and cousin came out Saturday night and the 3 of us fished Sunday.  Picked up a scoop of chovies, and headed SW to where we had finished fishing Sunday.
Once we found them it was on, every troll single or double turned into a bait stop and we stopped fishing when we ran out of ice.
Good grade of fish out there this year.

Loving it. Went from a 2019 21 ft north River Seahawk to this; 2584 raider coastal with twin 150s. Night and day upgrade for sure. Checked almost all the boxes for me while fitting into the budget. It’s big enough for ocean trips, yet manageable enough for the crowded puget sound fisheries fishing solo or just my wife and I.
It also fits in the driveway and tows super easy.

Nice haul!  Tuna are my favorite fish to catch. Nothing like hooking up tuna on live bait. I hope the tuna stay close and the weather holds for my next trip September 21.

Dang, that is a lot of room for fishing! Nice work converting on the bait stops, sure looks like it was a friendly ocean.

Wow!  That's awesome!  Just curious as to what you do with them?  We went last Saturday for our first time ever.  We ended up with 13 and spent the entire day Sunday smoking and canning.  I cold smoked all the bellies on Monday, and froze most of those.  Curious as to what else one can do with them?

We cut loins into 6" chunk's and freeze them to BBQ. Well seasoned, sear the outside and the middle stays nice and raw.
We also make a ton of sashimi and poke.

Great fish BPH..
And great boat choice..

:yeah: In addition I like to cut loins in to 1" medallions and pan fry/sear them. I cook some medium rare to eat right then and the rest I cook through to make tuna salad. It's also pretty good to add those pan fried leftovers in to pasta.
Fish hard, hunt harder!

I’ll can some. Freeze the rest. Take it out and grill the loins, or slice them into medallions and marinate in something like teriyaki and grill and serve with rice and veggies, poke, spicy tuna rolls, tuna enchiladas, beer battered tuna nuggets, I’ll lightly smoke loins and shred and make tuna casserole from scratch (realllll crowd pleaser)…it’s a super versatile fish.

It baffles me how many people can all the tuna they catch. I do maybe 20% canned rest frozen raw. So much you can do with raw tuna. Pretty limited once it canned.

She gets to make the offshore salmon runs. Tuna she stays home as it gets a bit hectic out there
