Stevens double barrel 410
«

Helping a lady find new homes for her husband‘s firearms, i came across this one she gave me because it piqued my curiosity. It’s an old Stevens 410 double that looks like it was used hard and put away wet. At first I had difficulty opening the action because of the rust but I’m glad I did because it was loaded. (most of the guns laying around the house and garage were loaded,!) I’d like to restore it but know little to nothing about this particular weapon. As you can see the stock and forearm were hastily repaired with marginal success and after I cleaned off the rust the action seems to work well. I think I can tackle the woodwork repairs because I’m quite experienced with woodworking. My question is what is the best way to get rid of the rust and either re blue or otherwise protect the steel? And any comments about this shotgun are appreciated.

What I would do is to boil the barrels in distilled water and run them through a carding wheel. It may take more than one or more boil's to get the rust out. Doing this will leave most of the original bluing. You can do the same with the action after you disassemble it, but make sure you are able to reassemble it later. I have a boiling tank and a carding wheel setup you can borrow if you want to try this method. If you can find the model number, you may find the schematic at
https://www.gunpartscorp.com/
that's the company I get my old shotgun parts from. member=23790]JDHasty[/member] may have some better ideas.

It's not bad looking. Never fun to be second in on a stock repair, but it looks salvageable. The barrels and action don't look bad in the photos. Those Savages are pretty solid, but I'd have to get a look at it, the bore in particular, in person. Shoot me a PM with your phone and let's talk. If are familiar with woodwork, I can walk you through how to finish the metal and do it right.

Evapo-Rust works like magic, you will have to be a bit creative to keep the barrel submerged without need to buy five gallons of the stuff.

Boil rusted parts in collected rain water and convert the rust (red iron oxide) to black iron oxide. Barrels can be hung in a PVC chimney over a pot of water and steam will convert the rust. Black iron oxide is pretty stable, rust never sleeps.

Thanks for the advice so far. JD, I sent a Pm for an actual phone chat because I’m cautious about disassembling the action.

Got the receiver separated from the stock today, thanks to JD Hasty for a tip to prevent more damage to the stock. The triggers and action looks really solid - cleaning and lube should get it functioning nicely. A very interesting discovery was finding, inserted into the stock retaining bolt hole, a very old piece of oiled paper wedged in the hole. On it is the name and address of an early owner, perhaps the original owner. Cool!

If you want it to never rust again, Cerakote it. If you want a utility finish, get it parkerized.

Ive often thought about putting a piece of "scribe" copper or aluminum under a Butt plate or elsewhere internally , of some OLD family guns. So some day the owners will have an idea of the history. Ive bought some myself that I wish they could talk!
