How old of canned venison or meat have you eaten?
« on: November 19, 2025, 04:57:27 PM »
How old of canned venison have you eaten and been ok?  I've got some jars from 2022 that I had forgot about, it looks good still.  My grandma says as long as the seals haven't broken it's fine.  What say you?

Still sealed? I’d eat it and not think twice!

Do the ol’ tappy tap on the lid and if it’s still sealed you’re good to go for many years. I’m still eating tuna and pork from 2020, still great.
$5 is a lot of money if you ain't got it

If sealed it should be fine. I always give it the sniff test to make sure it’s not spoiled. I had a 10 year old can of tuna out of rotation and was still better than the store tuna.

In 1966, I was eating C-Rations......in 1967, in Alaska, I was eating K-Rations which had to be either WWII or Korean War vintage......at some point we were advised to toss the K-rats with pork as the cans were bulging.

I'm currently eating elk from September 2022.......both burger and large pieces of top and bottom round.......still perfect after 2 years and 2 months in the chest freezer. Zero freezer burn. Thank you Del Fox Meats.

I figured I could trust grandma, she's in her upper 80's and has been canning since she was a teen.  Thanks all.

Several years back I froze a bunch of pink salmon, had a bunch leftover the next year so I thawed and canned it.  It took me 3 years to go through those cans and it was just fine.  By the third year, I was the only one in the family that would eat it, but waste not want not.

Should be good to go.  I've ate 3yo salmon & tuna and 5yo deer without issue if we'll sealed and ring rust free.

When working at a cannery in Alaska we smoked a bunch of sockeye and had the guys can it on the line. On a camping trip with some buddies I found one of those cans of smoked reds. We ate it. It was close to ten yers old. Tasted like we just canned it a few weeks ago. At the least, nobody died.

I am eating 2 year old canned elk and it’s totally fine! I think even up to 5 years the taste will be okay if it’s pressure canned.
If you do water bathing I would not go past 9 months on anything.

When my grandmother passed we found some canned pidgeon from the 40’s.  NO we didn’t eat it or open it.  But frozen is good for couple years and canned longer.
