That’s the nature of Bison “harvest”, it has never really been a “hunt” in the 1000’s of years humans have been after them, farmed or wild.  Too big, slow and dumb to look after themselves and survive serious predation threats; a lot closer to a cow than an elk.

Yes, although the skill required for the killing of a bison at full gallop on horseback with a bow and arrow or spear that you made yourself is admirable and not what's going to happen on this shoot. Historically, the motivation for the Plains Indians to hunt bison was the survival of their people and culture. Their, food, clothing, shelter, even weapons all came from the bison. What's occurring here certainly has nothing to do with subsistence or survival. If you pay $5K+, you get to kill what's basically a domestic animal. You'll likely be able to drive to the spot from where you shoot it. There's no comparison. For me certainly, there would be no sense of accomplishment. As I've said, I'd rather spend that money on a guided elk hunt on public land. The sense of accomplishment would be much greater.

The only reason I can see crap talking about these buffalo shoots or any buffalo shoots is if the shooter is gloating about some majestic achievement. This seems like a good way to get a couple freezers full of really fantastic and healthy meat along with a cool mount. Maybe some sort of buffalo skin blanket or perhaps a jacket. Don't tell your friends on hunt-wa that you killed it with a stick and string at full gallop and you're good with me. Mmmm mmmm mmm a bison brisket on the GMG...bring it on.

Here's a description of a hunt.

How We Hunt

After animals are located, we will glass the herd to locate the right animal for you. Then we'll make a careful approach with the "vehicle" to get you safely within range for the shot! Buffalo are unpredictable and have been known to charge humans and vehicles, so hunters need to stay in the vehicle for their own safety. When we are within range you will get out to shoot the animal. If you do not like the animal suggested by the guide, you need to tell him before you shoot that you do not want that animal. Once you shoot an animal it's your animal. Next, we'll wait for the herd to move off for everyone's safety. Then we field dress and load the animal and go to the skinning area. Local cutting and wrapping is available or we'll load the carcass into your vehicle for your return trip back home. Shipping can be arranged if needed, but it's far cheaper to transport your buffalo with you.

Someone care to guess who wrote this?

This is a cull management hunt simple as that.

:chuckle: I love Bison meat and a mature bull can yield up to 550 lbs boneless meat. Just over $9/lb isn't too bad. But, from the description it sounds like processing and packaging is extra. May be pretty pricey for such a bulk buy of an older animal. And $5K is the minimum bid. Could be more.

Both hunts are for a 6 plus year old bull and include field dressing and skinning.

My uneducated guess is that these are 2 different bulls that have been selected to be culled from the breeding herd. My guess is that you will accompanied by a member of the tribe to make sure they are the correct target. There will also be a backup gun to make sure that if you don't put the animal down. "They" will.

So what? This isn't a hunt. It's a shoot. Whether the tag holder finishes the animal or not, I doubt he'll get much satisfaction from the experience. At a minimum of $5K, you know it's not for the meat. Even if i had that kind of money to throw around (which I don't), this wouldn't interest me in the least. A guided, fair chase elk hunt? Absolutely.

To each their own.  Lotta meat for something near market price albeit  a 6+ year old bull ain't gonna be the greatest steaks.

A tule elk hunt at Grizzly Island is effectively a cull hunt (mature bulls), but 1000's of people put in for the drawing.

Who's to say one couldn't choose to hunt this bison with stick and string?

Not for me personally, I won't even pay for a rayonier or weyerhauser permit. But who cares? Lots of raffles and paid hunts of all types out there, to each their own a long as it doesn't take opportunity from me.

No ones saying you can't sling a arrow at them. Just says to make sure you are proficient with your choice,Weapons & Shot Opportunity

Hunters may use any weapon they are proficient with that's large enough to bring down a bison, this includes rifles, bows, pistols, and black powder. Shot opportunity has been 100%. We can usually get within 30 to 100 yards or less, so practice at those distances.

I did it for the meat only, didn’t take the skull or hide because I didn’t want them. $2k for the “hunt” $500 for the butcher for 400 lbs. of excellent meat.  Will I do it again? No, it was nothing more than slaughtering an animal from 30 feet away, I never even left the ATV. Was it worth it? Hell yes, that was a lot of excellent meat.
