Kettle Crest Area
« on: November 21, 2007, 09:51:19 PM »
Last year we shot 4 big mule deer--2 in Wa.--2in Id. So I decided to scout the kettle crest area last summer, an old timer gave me a hot spot. Our goal was to take another buck of at least 165''. First scouting trip I found 5 shooter bucks. The deer stayed there all summer. We got messed up by another hunter on the opener. At least the big bucks are still there for next year. I saw 2 bucks that were solid 170-180'' deer. Has anyone had any luck up on the Crest. Really didn't see anybody except 1 local and boy was he shocked!!!!

I hunted up there on the opening day and passed up a 21" 3 point muley. I didn't see any one else up there with in a mile of me but where I go, that's normal.

I hunt it religously every year. a couple years ago I had a 3 axle toy hauler behind a duramax filled with a yamaha rhino and 4 wheelers. as you know it is foot traffic only. I called the law on him and they warned and sighted him (2 different times) I eventually left as the lazy slobs just kept riding in. we saw no deer that trip. we typically see at least one very good buck, but if they get any pressure it is over. the KC is a killer area, but any public land can get no pressure one year and pounded the next. I suggest scouting a couple drainages so you have at least 3 you are familiar with as that is NO place to get screwd up.

If you want to se some winner bucks find the peaks that have no trail that is "easy" to the top. there are always good buck up there.

I know what you guys mean. Any pressure and its over in that spot. If I hunt it again I''ll have to find 2 more remote spots for backup. The place I hunted had no trail so we had to rough cut it about 3 miles. I really think some of those bucks die of old age. I did see a whitetail at about 6000ft. back in august. I don't think he was lost just living the good life... probably why he was so big.
