Truth 2 Issue
«
on:

I've been shooting off and on for the last month making sure I have plenty of practice in before the season. Well, this morning I was shooting, and I always start at 30 yards and work my way farther out. I got to 60 yards, and my first group hit good, but when I went to shoot my second group, my first two arrows missed the Glen-Del buck completely to the right and a little low. I was like WTF?! Then I noticed that on the upper string silencer, the string had missed it and was sitting on the outside. Normally, it doesn't sit in the middle of the silencer, but rather a little to one side, the side it was now sitting on the outside. So, I rotated the silencer to allow the larger portion of the "cup" to be on the error side. This shot flew good and the string was inside the silencer, but barely. This time it was more towards the other side (which I could expect since I rotated it). I quit shooting because my arm was getting a little tired, so I thought maybe I was just not getting a clean release and the string was flying off to one side. Could that be a possibility? I've never had this issue before when shooting it.

Possible bad release, but that's a stretch to throw the string off that far. More likely the set screw holding it in came loose after the first shots, or however it's held tight. The vibration of a shot from any bow is pretty violent, and it can mess with the best of designs to hold parts tight. Try loctite or teflon tape on the threads to help keep it from moving, if that was indeed the problem.

They have came loose before, that wasn't the case this time. I went out and shot again this evening, and only did it a couple times out of maybe 30 shots.

cant say I have had that happen with my hoyt..... lol I couldnt resist, expecially coming from brent, but in all seriousness I have no idea why that would happen.... if nothing was lose on the bow and the top silencer did not roatate then how could it be of the silencer that much? is your idler wheel bent at all? that would change the string angle, but you said it only happens a every now and then? I dont think even a horrible release would do that either, take a pic of the bow and what it looks like the next time it happens, maybe that would help us figure it out........

I figured out my problem tonight, but I won't mention his name
I had previously been shooting my bow with the odd colored vane pointing down. While out at the range last week, a guy in the shop said you should always shoot odd colored vane either out to the side or up, and my trustworthy cousin relayed this to me as we were shooting the 3-d course and he saw me nocking an arrow. I thought it might have some merit, since the rest would have to drop fast enough to get out of the way of that vane, and when I was younger I always shot odd colored out, so I started shooting odd colored out or up. The few shots at the range seemed to fly ok. Then I started shooting like that when I got home, and that is when I started having issues with the string coming outside the silencer and launching arrows into my dad's field. So, tonight I started with 5 brand new arrows, and started out at 30 yards shooting odd colored up. My groups at 30 were less than stellar and I was getting frustrated, but I wasn't having any issues with the string coming outside the silencer. Then, as I was nocking an arrow, I discovered my problem. With the odd colored vane up, the side vane was hitting the cable, thus pushing the string out to the side, and making the arrow fly like crap. I went back to shooting odd vane down and my groups were way better. Wish I would have thought of this about 2 days ago...

Yeah, I have to otherwise I get contact with the vane on the cable. The rest is dropping fast enough to where I don't get any contact on the rest.

It doesn't matter that color you have pointing down as long as you have clearance. I personally shoot with the cock vane up on a trophy taker fall away. They are slightly turned to the right for optimal clearance. The use of the cock vane (the odd color) is to insure that you have the arrow on the string the same way everytime so that you have no issues with clearance. It is more crucial with some rests than others.
