Walk in, get away from the gates.  Use a bike.  I hunted Margaret bow many years ago and ran into all of the other drawees.  Had a blast, 13 legal bulls less than 100 yards the day I got mine at 16.  Get out and scout, they don't get disturbed much so stay pretty close to where they are comfortable.

Have FUN!

Unless you've never elk hunted before, you don't need a guide..... Save your money for some sausage processing!  Or a rented pack horse to haul it out.  Them hills are crawling with elk.  Opening morning on my hunt, I passed a 4X4 at 20 yards just feeding in a little meadow off the side of the road.

Sorry to step on someone trying to make a buck but... :twocents:

I got a margret tag 12 years ago, before Weyco locked it up. Master hunter tag with a bow, nice 7x7 P&Y 286 5/8 grossed 308. Might want to go in off the Windy ridge to Ryan lake road and hunt the standing timber by Black mtn. I seen game trails in there you could drive a F350 on. I was hunting the top of miners creek and chased about seventy head with a big 7x7 over there but it was to far to hunt day hunts, hunt with your camp on your back. Or take a row boat to the far end of Coldwater Lake and hunt up there, a guy at work a few years back did that and got a nice 6x6. This year I drew a Upper Smith Creek any elk archery tag :IBCOOL:. Good luck and hopefully Weyco will open the roads so you can get in to the good stuff. I ended up killing my bull over the ridge from the Coldwater visitor center. You can walk your bike into that area real easy.

Just a quick note about hunting up the end of Coldwater Lake.  You may want to do some careful map study before going in there.  I still have the WDFW map from last years hunt.  Not all of the area off the end of that lake is open.  There is a inlet creek that you follow to a FS trail that then goes NE.  So basically a good chunk of that nice ground in the bottom is not open to hunt. If you look at a satellite shot of the bottom, you'll see the creek hangs to the left side.  It may have been open in the past, but per the definition I received last year a good portion of it was not open.

Sounds like you had a good hunt...  Do you have any pics of your 7x7?
