Breed Registries
« on: July 08, 2009, 01:55:44 PM »
Dang it, I had a good topic/debate going with Happy Gilmore on a thread I started to jack that got deleted.  I would like to hear folks opinion on the subject of breed registries.  I think Happy Gilmore took offense to what I was saying and I don't blame him because I don't hink I stated it very well.  Sorry about that HG.  Here's what I was saying and I'll give you a little background so you know where I'm coming from.  Most breeds of dogs were breed for a reason, sporting, work, hunting etc.  Today most hunting breeds have suffered in the hunting dept because they become popular with the general public.  Now dogs that are registered and put through their paces in Field Trials and such I believe those dogs are the ones that should be registered a certain way so guys know, I buy a pup from that registry then I'm getting a good pup from parents that hunt, not just parents that come from past hunters.  UKC recently made the Leopard Cur the 7th hound breed, the American Leopard Hound (which was strictly a money move on UKC's part)  Hound my @$$.  They are curs.  Anyways that was a few greedy breeders abandoning the breed, IMO, but that's a different argument.  The American Leopard Cur polled it's members and they decided long ago, if you want to breed Leopard Curs and register them with the ALCBA then you had to follow these rules.  Rules that were put in place for the betterment of the breed, not for mass producing puppies.  See that is the key, if your concern is the breed and not your pocket book then certain rules are good for the breed.  Pups can only be registerd from permanently registered parents and dogs can only be permanetly registered after they prove their hunting ability in the field.  When UKC made the Leopard Cur a hound breed they instantly became the latest fad, everyone wants a blue merle leopard cur.  So guys are out there right now breeding leopard hound after leopard hound puppies out of parents that may or may not have a clue how to hunt, may or may not have a nose, may or may not have treeing instincts. The breed as a whole has suffered and will continue to suffer.  What are your thoughts on breed registries?

the thread got deleted because the gentleman that started the thread decided to not pursue studding his dog out.

he asked me to delete it.

carry on.

I know I saw that.  I wasn't complaining about it being deleted.  In fact I should have started a different thread anyways instead of  :jacked: his.

I don't know much about curs, and correct me if I'm wrong, but you want some thing like what the german breeds have set up. DD, DL, DK for example. I personally like the standards that they have emplaced, but feel it is a very large commitment. If some one doesn't want to take the time/energy/expenses to test there dogs they shouldn't have to. That being said, those people are, in my opinion, the ones that created  the american counter parts; GWP, GLP, GSP.  I don't feel that these are lesser dogs in any way, but I do feel that you have to do a little more research with your choice of breeder to ensure you are not going to some one who claims to hunt, but in truth goes to take a few pics of there dogs in the field every year just to turn a profit.

So I guess I would say, Yes I like registries, but they are not for everyone, nor do they guarantee any thing...... so really whats the point  :dunno:

I didn't take it the wrong way or get offended by it. Sorry if it came across that way. And yeah, we should have started a different thread- I'm pretty opinionated about things and it comes across wrong because I do respect others own opinions and listen to their point.

There are many, many, many more breeds that are not recognized officially although, recognized as contributing to the charactaristics of newer breeds. Obviously, Curs are a more recent introduction which is an off-shoot of multiple mixes just like any other dog. A specialized breeding of traits to be more proficient at the task it is bred to accomplish.

For most folks, I think getting a good dog requires getting it from a good, reputable breeder. Sure, plenty of dogs of neighborhood breedings of a pure bred to a purebred take place and produce a fine outcome. Registration just gives you a little security. You can look to see what grandma and grandpa accomplished. Good breeders breed to proven dogs who have traits intended to compliment the others deficiencies. If this isn't done, we diminish the good traits which took generations to bring out.

My dog is a big baby and doesn't like to work unless its' her idea. In the future, I will not breed her to a show dog or a dog which isn't proven to be high energy and high drive to hopefully off-set her weaknesses. This is how purebred dogs have begun since day one.

If we just breed dogs so your kids can "have an experience" of birth or whatever, it is a wrongdoing on every person who worked hard to develop the individual breeds we all love.

---ranting.....I forgot what the topic was about.....ahaha.....
