Went out this afternoon and drifted the black river in my new (to me) drift boat. Never had one but got this thing and i think im hooked. Ive got alot to learn about how to run it but It was a ton of fun and even managed to catch a few trout along the way.

that's a nice looking rainbow you got there. does that river have any current? the parts i've seen look like a big swamp.

Its pretty darn slow and we actually rowed downstream most of the time to make better time. It was good though for me to practice my rowing skills. We hit the section between schooland rd in rochester to the hwy 12 bridge near oakville.

a good float for practice/learning with some current but nothing dangerous is the yakima river through the canyon if you can get over there.

there's great fishing this time of year too.

That sounds fun and its not super far but how long does that take to run? like all day or what? I would need to figure out where to put in and out etc but sounds cool sometime...

there's several put in/take out spots and red's fly shop does a shuttle. it takes anywhere from a couple hours to a couple days depending on where you want to float from/to and how much fishing you do or don't do. it is about 1 hour 45 minutes to the canyon from bellevue lets say. i have floated from the top to the bottom, did a lot of fishing and camped out at umtanum with all my gear in the boat over the course of 2 days, also have done a whole lot of day trips over there where the floats can last anywhere from a couple hours to all day.

it gives distances between launches and shuttle prices so you don't need to bring 2 vehicles. really it costs about the same as gas does to drive another rig, just a little more convenient...saves you time.

Thanks for all the information i really appreciate it

The boat is actually a Lindstom... i dont know too much about them other than that they are or were made in BC. I got mine out in elma from a guy for like 500 bucks. Its small but i like it because it will actually fit in my longbox superduty and my brother and i can take it in and out pretty easy. Trailer might be nice but how it is we just take both trucks and shuttle it.

well...even with a trailer you still have to shuttle it.

pm me if you have any more questions on the yak floats. it can be a fun deal to do an overnighter out of the boat.

Nice fish, I drifted the Black once, all I caught was bass and squawfish on a Carey Special. The habitat looked ideal for Cutts though, I'm guessing there's some bruiser's in there.

Couldnt seem to hook one but i saw several that looked to be maybe 16+ inches... seemed pretty big to me but i dont really know???

that's very good sized for any resident river trout on this side of the state. i fish in the deschutes every now and then and most are 6-8" long with a big one going 10 or 12. of course the sea runs that come in during october and november are a different story...

16" is a pretty good Cutt, though in a stream that size, it's possible to find them to over 20".
