Some more Thurston Co. area bucks
« on: April 22, 2007, 02:36:23 PM »
Here are a few more pics I found.

My Dad shot this one in the mid 80's. It was wide 3 point that field dressed over 220.

A little 4 pt that I shot when helping another friend track a wouned 3 pt. This was also in the late 80's.

This one is also from the late 80's. I shot a 5x5 one day after school and two days later my Dad got a good 4x4.

There is a pretty good story for the 5x5 that I will post at another time.

Nice bucks!
My buddy has a newspaper article of a buck his grampa killed out at Hawks Prarie in the 50s. It made the front page, it was a 24" 4x4 and wieghed 225#. I know the genes for some big ones are out there.

There used to be a small private game farm out there. Some of the biggest bucks I have ever seen were near the cheese factory and dump. Some of the areas we killed deer on are now houses and road. What a shame.

The buck on the right in the bottom pic was from Hawks Prarie.

I wasn't going to bring that up b/c a lot of people don't believe it. From what I have heard the guy had mule deer and they bred into the blacktail gene pool. I have seen some monsters out at Hawks Prarie and Johnsons Point. I live in South Bay now and we have a few good bucks around here. Not many people have heard of that game farm.

The way I heard it he had both Mulies and Whitetails. Years ago I found an old shed out there that had two main beams from the same base. 20 years before that my father's friend shot a 4 pt that had two main beams with 2pts each from the same base.

The feed must be real rich in that area. A college I went to did a field study in a clearcut not far from the Hawk's Prairie area. Myself and three other guys broke off and were walking a logging track through the cut. One of the guys stopped and said look, we all stopped and looked right. There was a huge, symmetrical four point laying there in the Scotchbroom not 30 yards away, easily over 200lbs. After he ran off, I looked around and found a matched set of 3pt antlers chewed down really bad. I'll try to post them later.

Here's the matched antler set I found a few years ago in Thurston, about 40 yards from where we kicked out a 22" four point.

Nice sheds....those would be about average for that unit during the 80's.

D-Man, it looks like you need to get in there and do some squirrel control.

LOL, yep the good 'ol days...

Hear ya on the squirrel's, they are my absolute nemesis while in the woods. One got in my tent one time at deer camp, me not realizing I went in to roll my sleeping bag out, only to roll out a squirrel on my camp cot. Short story, I fell across the cot diving after the bugger and broke it in half.....

  :bash:
