.338 Re-Load Question???
« on: July 25, 2009, 03:14:00 PM »
Ive decided to start shooting Barnes Tipped Triple Shock bullet through my .338 in 210 grain. Does anybody have any good 210 gr. reloads they use. Ive got a pre-64 model 70 with a 1 in 10 twist. Im about to load up some bullets, but thought I might ask and see if anybody can give me a decent starting point. Im more worried about accuracy than speed. My old mans borrowing the gun for a moose hunt in canadiuhhh for the first half of October and ive got to get him shooting.
Thanks for your time,
-Paul

Ponyboy,

We are using Reloader 19 with 210 Gr. Partitions and it is very accurate.  Cloverleaf at 100 yds,

76 gr. is max in Noslers manual, and we have got them loaded at 75.8 gr. of powder.  That said, start lower and work your way up, your gun may not handle the near max loads, and it would be a crime to destroy that rifle, let alone the danger you put yourself in.

Do some research.  Look up this site.  Reloadersnest.com.  That sight has a world of knowledge on it.

Tell your dad good luck on the moose hunt!  I am jealous.
By my honorable conduct as a hunter let me give a good example and teach new hunters principles of honor, so that each new generation can show respect for their god, other hunters and the animals, and enjoy the dignity of the hunt.

Thanks for the responses huntbear and demon tang. It just so happens that when I wa shooting noslers through my .338 (225 gr.) I was using 76 gr of RL-19 with good success. I also just happen to have a couple pounds of 4350 laying around. I'll try both powders, through the entire load range(min. to max.). There'll be something in there that'll shoot the way I want it to.
Thanks again guys,
-Paul

4350 works best for mine have tried RL.19 and IMR7828 but the IMR4350 does the best for me at 70grns pushing the 210 ttsx. Good luck

I have not shot the 210's, but have shot the 225's and 250's.  not sure this data will help, but here is what I have:

Also,

This is the rifle I took to Africa.  I did some testing at the range in Ephrata on loads for 225 and 250 grain TSX's where the OAL and powder weights varied.  All loads used H 4350 as powder.  Note that this powder is not listed in the Barnes reloading book.  I did not load them and as I recall, the person who did load them got this info from Barnes directly.  So use this load at your discretion.

Here are the observations I took away from this set of shots.  (only measrued FPS on these shots, not accuracy)

•   Shot sets 3 and 8 had high FPS variability within the group.
•   The Factory loads from Remington (sets 1 and 2) were very consistent in performance across both sets.
•   The slowest load was set #6, the 250 grain Barnes with 63 grains of powder and set 3, the 250 grains with the 3.33 OAL.  These were the only two sets with an average velocity that was lower than the factory loads.
•   Generally the 3.38 OAL outperformed the 3.33 OAL
             -  In 250 grain bullets:  Set 3 & 4 (3.38 OAL) outperformed sets 5&6 (3.33 OAL) in both the 63 and 68 grain loads
             -  In the 225 grain bullets:
= In the 68.5 grain loads; set 10 (3.38 OAL) outperformed set 7 (3.33 OAL)
= For the 63.5 grain loads; set 8 (3.33 OAL) outperformed set 9 (3.38 OAL).  However set 8 had high deviation from the set’s average velocity making the set somewhat suspect.
•   The hottest load was set 10; the Barnes 225 grain with 68.5 grains of powder and a 3.38 OAL.
•   The hottest load for the 250 grain bullet was set 4; the 68 grain with the 3.38 OAL.

Also, we determined the green Chrony had some issues so I would focus on the data fromt he blue chrony.
