NIKON OR LEUPOLD RANGFINDER

 NEED TO BUY A NEW RANGEFINDER  WHAT DO YOU ALL THINK? IM LOOKING AT THE NIKON 440 RIFEL HUNTER FOR $260.00

I have had the 440 for 4 years and i have never had an issue with it. It's even been ran over buy a 4 wheeler and still works fine. Tough range finder.

I have the Leupold RX-II.  It's alright, consistently a yard different than my Dad's Nikon, for some reason.  Has a lot of junk going on in the screen - big number for the angle compensated distance, little number for the actual, bunch of other stuff.  If you practice with it (3d shoots if you're a bowhunter, etc.) it's alright and you can figure out what you need to be looking at...if it's not getting a good read, the distance is more than 60 yards, the big number doesn't show up, you accidentally hit the button to program the thing, etc. it will end up being confusing. 

I also was using it in low-light conditions (late in the day under trees) and looking at a monster buck - it was too far to shoot (probably 80 to 90 yards) but I couldn't read the distance number and would have been absolutely pissed if I was actually in range.  My buddy has a Leica and he was able to use it to look back at the buck (after it had moved up the hill) at about 200 yards and it worked perfectly.  Of course, the reticle and numbers are red and easy to see.

I guess that the new RX-1000 has a red reticle, so maybe that would be a little better.  If I had to do it over again, I would have bought the Nikon (of course, the RX-1000 didn't exist at the time and, as far as I know, the Nikon has a black reticle but less junk to be confused by when you're in a hurry - again, it's ok if you practice with it.)  If I had all the money that I'd never need but could figure out how to put to good use, I would get a Leica...

IMO the Nikon is a better deal. As mentioned above the Leupold has allot of stuff going on in the screen. The Nikon is simple and the optics are good. The main selling point for me was the lifetime no fault warranty. Nikon stands by their products and for good reason they make great stuff. Go for the Nikon

I switched to the Nikon's and think they are better but if you can't make up your mind and want to save some cash, I have a one season used RX II that I wll sell for $200. Let me know if you are interested.

Of the 2 i would go with the nikon the leupold just seems difficult to work with as far as changing modes and what not. I personally have a bushnell with the arc system, nikon still didnt have any angle compensating range finders yet when i purchased my bushnell but the leupold rx-II was the other rangefinder i looked into and i decided to go bushnell instead

I haven't had any problems with my Leupold RX-III. Left it laying in the field last year for a week after my daughter got her deer. None the worse for wear. I haven't used any of the other brands so I can't really compare it to them thou. I have never had any problems with anything made by Leupold so I keep going back to them.

Always buy Nikon over leupold, all you get is the "L" on the side of the Leupold and i don't think that is worth the extra $200.  I personally love nikon and that is all i use for any optics.

I just purchased a Leica CRF 900 for $429 from Camerlandny.com.  I would have to give this rangefinder 2 thumbs up.  Not sure about the Nikons or the Leupolds but you won't be sorry with the CRF 900 for the extra money if you can afford it.  I'm sure that the Nikon and Leupold finders are decent.  I did some asking on here and online research and led me to the Leica.  Here's a website with a review that might interest you.

I dont know what the differece is between the 440 and the 550 but this sounds like a pretty good deal.

I have the same one, for 4 yrs also.  TOUGH.  Lives in my Golf bag 9 months a year

neither, I had a Nikon it was junk, leupolds are FAR superior but to complicated. forget it, Buy a Leica!!!!! the 1200 cant be beat. a Swarovski might be better but more money.
I bought the Nikon and sold it 2 months later for a loss, it would not work at all unless in bright direct sun.
