This mornings catch
« on: July 29, 2009, 02:49:25 PM »
I went out this morning bass fishing at newman lake. My brother and I got on the lake about 7:00. At about 7:40 I caught a 17" bass on a hawg boss crank bait. About 20 minutes later i caught a 14" bass. After that we didnt catch anything except for a couple perch. So at about 9 we decided to make our way back to the launch because to boaters and jet skis were showing up and on my last cast i hooked a tiger muskey. I faught with him for a while and got him next to the boat but we forgot our net  :bdid: . My brother reached in and tried to pick him up and he just took off. He did this 3 times before he was tired enough that i could lift him into the boat. I didnt measure him but i think he was probably 26-30 inches. Not the biggest muskey but it was my first one! Here is a picture my brother didnt get the whole fish but you get the idea. The picture is a cell phone pic so its not very good.

Nicely done!  I'm still on a quest for my first tiger musky.

They are tiger musky.  A hybrid of a northern pike and musky.  I have no idea if they are good to eat.  I believe the minimum size to keep is 50".

50 inches is the legal limit. They started that this year.

most people recommend letting them go.  the state doesn't plant very many.  they're in the lakes more so for squawfish control than sportfishing.

i've heard pike/musky are a real pain to clean because of their "Y" bones, but good tasting.
you can still get gas in heaven, and a drink in kingdom come,
in the meantime, i'll be cleaning my gun

Roger on the good tasting part. And also roger on the bitch to clean part. I've caught several out of Curlew and finally killed about a 40" one a few years back. Tasted great but was tuuuuuffffff to fillet.

Killed those ones the next year, caught them the same night in the same cove, about 10 minutes apart, a 37" and a 39".
