best news in a while.
« on: August 03, 2009, 09:08:14 PM »
i just got word today that i have access to a private ranch this elk season. i can hunt it anytime. i just cant decide which season i should hunt. there is 3 of us that get to hunt this ranch, and the ladie is locking it up to everyone else.

man i cant wait. there are some big bulls and alot of decent bulls on this ranch. its almost a slam dunk hunt according to my buddie.

should i take the chance that the elk will be there during moden firearm season. or should i buy a new bow and get in there when i know for a fact there will be elk in there and they will be alot easier to call in.

the only problem is saving the money in time to get a new bow, and get back into shooting.

yeah, it might be a little late to buy a bow and start shooting.  :twocents: maybe plan on a smokepole instead.  :dunno:

If it were me I would NOT bank on the modern rifle season.  I would get a bow and get first crack at them.  Once the guns start it is hard to tell where they will go.  They will also be more vocal during bow season and easier to locate.  Just my  :twocents:

Not enough information for a desision.
Where is the ranch?
What does it border (prive or public land)?
What is the hunting pressure on the surrounding land?

Just a few answers needed to make a better desision for me at least.

 :yeah:
That is a bit of a dilemma.  Did you draw a WA multi-season permit or is this outta state?  Since it's private, if you can stand to wait til modern, have the surrounding hunting pressure from all the other hunters outside the ranch push the elk to the relative zero hunting pressure of the ranch.  How big is the ranch?  What state?  Lotsa options when you have the privilege of exclusive access.   :twocents:

if it's Linda North's place, I'd get in there early, because there are a lot of unscrupulous folks who go out there "uninvited" through holes in fences and broken down gates.

the ranch is on the west side somewhere around shelton from what i know. i havent really gotten those details yet. and its about 250 achers. borders wharehouser(sp) property that is usually closed up to vehicle access that time of year (at least it has been the last 2 years i went over to hunt that area). but people still hunt the area walking in and by horse. also jeep trails leading into the property.

the hunting pressure in the shelton area for elk is pretty heavy from what my buddie says. at least from his experience the last 2 years of living there. so it this ladie is gonna lock up the ranch for him and his closest friends then we should have a 90% chance of success with any weapon we choose. HOPEFULLY anyway.

i have been shooting my recurve everyday for the last 2 weeks, but its only 45lbs. and though i know i can take an elk with it. i dont want to risk anything.

Sounds like the area off SR108, behind the Casino. 250 acres isn't very big. Good luck.
