45lb recurve?

ok i have asked this before but thought i would ask again. cause i cant remember anything anymore told me on the subject.

so as some people have read on my other thread. i have a chance to hunt a private ranch. i think maybe a horse ranch i guess...anyway.

well the only bow i have at the moment is a 45lb recurve. im an exellent shot with it out to 40yds. though i dont think i would take a shot past 25yds with it on an elk.

so would it be safe to hunt elk with this 45lb recurve? if i keep shots under 25yds. and for me getting within 20yds of elk is not a problem especially in good cover.

also just to know. i would be shooting wood arrows with of course razor sharp broadheads. and my draw length with this bow is really 30" so the draw weight is a little more then 45lbs.

 You will do fine with that setup for elk considering your qualifying statements! Good Luck & have fun!!! Keepem sharp!! Nothing out of the package is sharp enough!! (grin)

You should have no problem with good shot placement. Back in the old days :chuckle: my grandfather use to shoot elk with an old Fred Bear 35lbs @28, and never had to go more than 150yrds to recover them. His moto was the closer the better, and wouldn't shoot if he was more than twenty-five yrds. You'll do fine, and fill that freezer.

My partner shoots a 47 lb self bow at his big game Elk , Deer and Caribou. That self bow should have less power than most fiberglass recurves in the 45lb range.

If you draw 30 inches, then you are shooting 50-51#.  I will be hunting elk this year with similar a similar weight recurve.  Keep them sharp and put them in the lungs.  Should not have any problems.
