Considering a new puppy.

If this is a tired subject please forgive me, I've been away from the site for a while.  I'm considering a new puppy for duck/upland hunting.  My partner had to be put down last December and it was one of the hardest things I've had to do.  But, all sadness aside, it was unevitable. 
So, I've been in talks with the family and we've decided to entertain the thought of raising another family member.  we have talked about Labs, Spaniels, Retrievers, etc.  I dont have a who lot of room and have thought about a medium size dog that has a laid back disposition.  Does anyone have a Boykin spaniel? or has anyone been around any?  Thoughts on any other medium size breeds? 
I really appreciate any input and feedback.

My dad has had two springer spaniels. All have been real good dogs. Only drawback I thought was you really have to keep up on the grooming. Especially if you use them for a bird dog, those spiky seed things can be a real nightmare.

The American Water Spaniel makes a great retriever and upland flusher.  IMO they have more upland instinct than a lab, better quarterring, easier to train to keep in gun range and a better nose, very much like a field bred Springer.  They make nice retrievers, really long blinds are hard to train as they tend to do things like bank run if it's quicker than swimming and don't take to repeated drills very well.  100+yrd blinds are pretty easy to train for though and that covers 95% of most retrieves.  They are small enough to lay in you lap  in the evenings and there is enough room on a cot  for them to sleep with you but the do tend to hog the covers.

I would go with a Lab, or a Brittany. There are great breeders for both here in Washington.
