Spine Tolerance cheating??
«
on:
August 14, 2009, 10:53:06 AM »
So, my wife is practicing for a deer hunt in Oregon in Sep with her little 45 lb bow...
well, Im a cheap ass and trying to figure out if she will ever be able to get 1.5 inch groups at 30 yards using my arrows? Im too cheap to buy her 100$ arrows...lol
So right now she is shooting my 28" full metal jackets in 400 with a 125 grain broad head??
She probably needs a 24" FMJ in 500 with maybe a 90 or 100 grain BH?
am I setting her up for mediocre shooting?? or is the longer arrow with stiffer spine ok if 30 yards is max? also, how concerned should I be about a 125 versus a 100 grain bh?
thanks

Its my understanding that a heavier head will weaken the spine some. Not sure how much?

I went through this a little while ago, I believe you are shooting yourself in the foot with that heavy of an arrow combo and such a light draw weight and a slow bow. She should probably be shooting around a330- 340 grain arrow combo I would think? Wife shoots a Mathews switchback and with a 330 grain arrow only shoots 212 FPS, and that is 55 pound draw weight. Not sure how the kinetic energy plays on a light draw slow bow with a heavy arrow versus a light arrow to kindof match the poundage and bow speed she is using. Wife is shooting Easton axis 500's with 85 grain Montechs.

I think she would better off shooting 500's. I have a similar draw length to your wife but shoot higher draw weight. I was using 400's and it shot ok. I switched to 500's and my bow performs much better than I had expected it to. It's faster and more accurate.

Guess what Im trying to say is shooting a 420 grain arrow (which is what that setup you have would weight with a 90 grain broadhead ps: I shoot the same arrow and length with 85 grain montecs @414 grain) out of her bow is going to be rediculasly slow and not have much aor hardly any penetration . If I were you I would take that arrow and a 90 grain field point and go shoot it through a crono and do the math for kinetic energy, who knows it might be fine but Im thinking it is a poor combo. Im no expert though.

Well..we are using the heavy stuff because its simply my stuff...Im being lazy and cheap and attempting to avoid buying her her own stuff!
Im gonna get off my arse and buy her some much lower spined arrows and switch to a 90 or 100 grain
the thing that bothers me is even at 20 yards the arrows sometimes plane around and impact 6-8 inches from POA. I can sorta shoot her bow and cant get any better groups than she does??
Other than spine...what could cause the umm planeing?
I wonder if sportsmans will build arrows at 1/2 dozen instead of a full?
The weight of arrows and changing arrows and shortening arrows is all in interest of shot groups...not concerns with speed or kinetic energy!

Go down to Luckyshot in chehalis, they will get you squared away. They do 1/2 dozen arrows.
Those heavy arrows might go through the hide and possible get a lung if she didnt hit any bone, that s all Im thinking, I could be wrong though.

You are F'ing her over. Would you shoot 38" 800gr arrows with 250gr head. My guess is no. So I would set her up well and then go have a good time together.
