Spinning Reels
« on: August 16, 2009, 03:17:00 PM »
What is a decent spinning reel for fishing for salmon from shore where the average fish is 2-5 pounds?  My spinning reel broke and I do not know very much about them but would like to replace it.  I am looking at spending $30-$40.  Any help would be appreciated.

Check out Shimano Sahara or Sedona. They are great, but might run you about $50 or so.

I agree but add the Symetre (sp) to that list. it does cost a little more. I own all 3 and love them. I am a shimano nut!

Probably a 2500 series reel would work just fine.

I have an older Symetre that I would let go for that price range. The only reason I don't use it is becuase I upgraded to a Stradic. Let me know if you are interested.

I have a symetre 3000FJ I just bought I use for Carolina and Texas rigging for bass.  Loaded up with 12lb fluorocarbon.  Casts like a dream

I love all my Shimano reels.  You cant go wrong with Shimano imo.

I switched all of my spinning reels to the Okuma Epixor EBs with the stripping switch. This allows you to flip the switch and strip line without flipping the bail. You can also troll with them pretty well.

So far they have been outstanding especially for the price. Check Cabelas often, they put them on sale quit often. I picked up 4 of the 30s for $51.00 each last year.

Pfluger Presidental series.  60 bucks not on sale, I have found them for as low $40 on sale.  I bought my first one a year ago and now have three.  It will be really hard for me to buy another reel, these are great

Thanks for your help guys.  I ended up with an Abu Garcia Cardinal.  Spooled with 20 lb test power pro line, it has caught me two pink and a 5 pound coho in the last two days.

Glad to hear your new reel is hauling in fish!!  If you decide to buy another, give the Pfleuger President a shot.  I've been using Shimano Stradic's for years and they are great, but tried a President at a third of a price after a good :twocents: report from a buddy.  Cast's as far and is as smooth as a Stradic.  Since, it's been used and abused a lot.  Still works great.  Actually, it's held up better than any Stradic I've used over a two year period.
