Anybody hunt the high country?
« on: May 14, 2007, 11:29:24 AM »
Hey all!  Just curious if any of you have ever archery hunted the high country?  This year a friend and I are planning to be in the Glacier Peak Wilderness area come September 1st as a scouting trip for him/hunting trip for me...  What are your experiences and what challenges will I face that one doesn't usually see in the "low" country?

ITs often very dry and noisey.

Big country, can be tough to get close.  That early though you probably won't run into many other hunters.  The deer can be pretty laid back that time of year too.

I'm definitely looking forward to it... He's hunted up there the last couple of years and they've taken some darn nice deer out of there... One on occasion he's seen a deer bed that was 3 feet deep because it's been used year after year...  We're planning on traveling light and hiking hard... Hopefully we'll get on a buck or two early in the morning and put him to bed and it'll allow me to put a sneak on him...  I've been shooting every day and am accurate out to 50 yards but don't plan on taking a shot past 40...  and I'm going after the first legal buck I see!   ;)

Sounds like you've got the right partner. Up in the high country, you're looking for pockets of deer. That is, certain drainages that some small groups of deer seem to favor. Your hunting buddy seems to found some of these favored "pockets".

Watching a buck bed down and then working a stalk on that bed can make for a fun, challenging morning.

I've made a similar campaign off and on for a number years in the peaks N. of the Twisp River. I love it!

It's a great life if you don't weaken

Be ready to care for the meat.  It will be hot and getting the meat cool is gonna be tough.  The bugs and yellowjackets can sometimes pose a real problem as well.  That's the bad news.  The good news is you will have an awesome hunt that will be without the normal problems of low land hunts.  Mostly being rushed by the fear of another hunter moving in screwing up you hunt for you.

Have fun
Kris
