Pre-Garcia SAKO rifles
« on: August 29, 2009, 11:24:26 AM »
Any of you on WFF collect the old pre-Garcia SAKO rifles?

I have purchased 2 of them and really like them. A .270 I just purchased shoots 1/2 inch groups. I really like the bolt and trigger on these rifles. A bit on the heavy side but a joy to shoot.
I also have 3 Tikka and think for the money a great gun.

I have a couple....my favorite deer gun is a late 50's early 60's vintage Sako Mannlicher in .308 caliber L671, lightweight and a joy to chase whitetails with.  The other is 60's vintage Deluxe .243 L579...beautiful gun..... french walnut, rosewood caps etc.  Both in mint condition.  Just don't make guns with that quality anymore.

It sounds like it's time to get a new gun.

Sako rifles were sold direct from the manufacturer to retailers prior to Garcia becoming the sole importer, with the rifles so marked, around 1972. Pre-Garcia's draw a premimum in value for being unmarked, usually adding about 25% to the worth.

Generally pre-Garcia were also of higher quality...Bofors steel markings on barrels etc.

Thanks guys, a good friend of mine shot one in 7mm mag, and it was not just a very nice gun, fit and finish wise, but it could shoot very well also.
