Some notes on measureing.......you don't always get credit for the largest part of the palm.  My moose illustrates that.  Its the most parallel line from the brow to the top, the most parallel to the inside edge fo the palm.  I lost close to two inches of prospective bone on this one.

This antler fit a bit better.  using tape is a great way to choose the line to measure.

   Was that an Shiras moose? Have you ever tried to go for the Alaskan Yukon moose?

No Sky thats an Alaskan bull.  All I need now is a nice Canadian to complete the "grand slam" of pope and young bulls.

Bone were you a resident when you shot him or was that before the 50 inch minimum, or 3 brow tine rule?

He is indeed JDB.  I always enjoy when I get to talk to him.

SKY, I've always lived in Washington.  Believe it or not, I thought it had three brows as I knew he would be pushing the 50 inch limit.  In the field, or green he was just about 54 inches.  He shrank a TON!  He grossed over 190 and now is 184 and change.  Thats alot of shrinkage.

I would have loved to have mounted him Michelle, but thats a long frisckin ways to carry out a moose cape.  I figured I had enough moose mounts in the house, a good antler mount would do just fine.  This thing is so massive and heavy, I'm not even sure how I am going to hang him still.  Man this is a heavy rack.

Well if you can't figgue out how to get it hung up.......... I guess you'll just have to cut them up and make a coffee tabe out of them.   

I can always find you a cape if you decide to mount him.  Capes that big raw are spendy.

I didn't want to put him on a plaque, though that would be the easiest.  I was thinking about running a wire or cable around the bottom of both bases to form a tight loop like you would hang a picture frame, but with a little heavier gage stuff, then put an industrial hook in the wall to hook it too, then cover up the cable for the most part with a leather covering over the skull cap.  Any other ideas or am I inventing the wheel.

They are an incredible animal. I shot a 66" off the Yukon river on a self guided hunt. Just getting the animal cut up to be able to get him back to camp is a task in it's self. Besides having a grizz come into camp and steal a side of ribs it was a total adrenaline rush. Loved it so much I am heading back up this fall!!

Thatsawesome Sky, I have a ton of respect for anyone that does a DIY hunt in Alaska, and is successful at it.  it was unbelievable work.  We shot ours a LONG ways  from the road.  Do you have pics to get on here?  I'll have to go back to check to see if there are any in this thread.  Its been awhile since I read through the whole thing.  I would love to see any pics if you have any, even if its just the anlers at home.  There are nothig like moose bones.

I will have to dig some pictures up. I drew one of the Kopyukuk control unit moose tags. We flew into Galena and had a transporter take us down the Yukon and up the Koyukuk river where we camped and hunted a slough off the main river. It was a blast my buddy lives in Anchorage and is a gunsmith/guide on Kodiak for brownies. The amount of wildlife up there is incredible. I would definately suggest it to anyone. But like you said they are not an animal you want to pack any amount of distance if you dont have to.
