Unit 18 Idaho
« on: September 03, 2009, 01:06:05 PM »
Just seeing if anybody has any info on unit 18.  My main hunting partner ended putting in separately this year due to babies, moose hunts and a variety of other reasons..... blah blah blah  but he ended up getting drawn for the deer tag and doesn't know much about the area.  He does have a jet boat and we plan on plenty of scouting but we are looking for a place to start. Anybody have some insight on this unit? I have hunted unit 11 and understand what the terrain is like and about what elevation to hunt.  Also Curious on what caliber of buck to put the our sights on!

Use to hunt it before it went to a draw unit. We would come in from the top and hunt south from pittsburg landing on down as far as low saddle.A lot of
the roads were walk in only, but the guys on 4 wheelers still went out on every ridge possible. >:( >:( Got a couple of decent bucks but no real hogs. I
would think with the draw it would be a good hunt now. Lots of good country. Hope your buddy kills a big one.

I hunted whitetails in there one year.  Up on top we saw lots of nice mule deer bucks.  I have also chuckar hunted in there a few times.  I have never been in 11 but i'm sure the country is the same.  When your on top it's so steep it looks like you could through a rock into the river.

We always went in out of Riggins and Lucile (not sure if that is spelled right).  From what I have seen you should see lots of deer and a lot of bucks.  I would shoot the first 170 i saw in there.  Most of the bigger bucks that I have seen in there would score between 150 and 160.  But I wasn't really looking for mule deer when I have been in there.

Good luck, you should have a great hunt.

i used to sturgeon fish up pittsburgh landing a lot and have seen a few mule deer that were absolute pigs, just south of the lower landing on a dirt quad trail, haven't been in a few years though...
