Elk Scouting Ethics
« on: September 11, 2009, 10:25:20 AM »
So being as my unit has been closed for quite a while, it's finally open and has coincided with a weekend I am able to go scouting.  Being as it is next weekend and the last 3 days of the archery season, what ethics do you guys reccommend while scouting.  I have to scout, but I don't want to royally screw up someone's hunt.  But I'm certainly not going into the season blind.

I'd probably do as much scouting from a distance as i could...maybe sit on a ridge and glass out of people's way as much as you can be. as long as you're not crashing through the woods making all kind of racket, i don't see a problem.

" In today's instant gratification society, more and more pressure revolves around success and the measurement of one's prowess as a hunter by inches on a score chart or field photos produced on social media. Don't fall into the trap. Hunting is-and always will be- about the hunt, the adventure, the views, and time spent with close friends and family. " Ryan Hatfield

Plenty of people will probably be out hiking this weekend seeing it is going to be nice.....I would not walk through an area I saw active hunting going on but the woods belong to everyone of us and there are plenty of non and anti hunters out there walking around who do not even know what a hunting party looks like.  I think your fine if you are not purposefully ruining it for someone.

If you're just driving around on the roads you're not going to hurt anything. And really that's all you've got to do to scout... learn the roads. There's hardly anywhere in the Toutle you can't drive to on a road. My brother and I will be in there for the early muzzleloader hunt. I don't think we're going to take the time to scout. But it really shouldn't be necessary, especially when it's just for a cow permit. What part of the unit are you planning on checking out?

the Toutle is open? thought that was a permit hunt
No people will tamely surrender their Liberties, nor can any be easily subdued, when knowledge is diffused and Virtue is preserved. On the Contrary, when People are universally ignorant, and debauched in their Manners, they will sink under their own weight without the Aid of foreign Invaders.
