Game carts?
« on: September 18, 2009, 08:13:23 PM »
How many of you use game carts?  I'm thinking of buying one due to my back. (surgery).  The fold up ones look ok as you could throw it on your back but don't know if they'll hold up.  The pricey ones look cool, but pricey.  How do they perform in the field?  I know through the blow downs they are useless but in open areas they could work good.  Just don't know if I should buy one.  (gotta shoot a deer before you haul it out :chuckle:).

I have one, cabelas mag i think, says it will haul 550lbs, havent had an animal on it that big, couple of deer and it worked ok, did use it to shuttle some Tamarack (larch) rounds about 24 inches in diameter and 15 inches thick to the truck, could put 3 at a time on it and it did great.
To hunt and butcher an animal is to recognize that meat is not some abstract form of protein that springs into existence tightly wrapped in cellophane and styrofoam.

I've had the Cabelas Magnum Hauler a few years, now.  It's holding up great bouncing around trails and riding in the back of my pick up.

I've used some custom made one in Montana - it was about the dimensions of the Cabela's Magnum.  Took an entire 5 point bull out about 6 miles (boned out) but was still able to get the entire thing out at ince.  We were hunting an area that had locked gates so were able to carry it back to a road and take it out on the game cart from there - worked pretty well.

It doesn't make things easy, however.  When we had steep downhill the cart kept trying to get away with the whole load of meat.  The best thing to do is load the meat up on your packboards and then put the packboards on the cart.  If you get to a place where you need to unload the meat to get the cart around an obstacle, it makes it a lot easier.

IF you do a search under game carts you will find more than enough information.
