I found a pretty decent NE WA Elk spot a few years back but unfortunately when the season opened I wasn't the only one who knew about it and it was a zoo. I had brought a friend with me and showed him the spot and that ARSHOLE brought not 1, not 2, not 3 but 5 people up to that spot this year for the archery season. Then he had the audacity to call me and complain that "people need to keep there mouths shut when they find these spots because they're getting too crowded" I said "Like YOU!!" He didn't understand why he shouldn't tell every Tom Dick and Harry either. Sumbitch pissed me off.

So now if the rule of 7 hold true thats gonna be another 30 friggin people who know this spot. I'm pissed. Thats the LAST time I show that guy ANY hunting spots.

Thats my "fall back" spot if I can't go to the blues during the elk season now I guess I need to find another one.

Same thing happened to us this year. Rarely saw anyone other than a few grouse hunters, this year had at least 20 other elk hunters in the same vicinity.

This is also a pretty good grouse and turkey spot and I've got both my bears there. I've been going there since I was a kid and I'm pretty pissed that he told that many guys. One of which wont tell ANYBODY about ANY of his spots. One of the other guys brings absolutely nothing to the table and I don't know the other 3. Oh' well, live and learn.

worried about this same thing for the upcoming 2009 elk season.
One of my fishing-hunting friends for the past 9 years and I parted ways this past spring, small stupid indifference that I couldn't put up with any longer.
Now I dread that he will bring a few fellas into an elk area that my father and I learned for over 40 years. the former friend has witnessed 8 elk kills in this area the last 9 seasons.

Happened to me hunting for deer in the N.E. corner with my Dad. Knew of a spot from scouting, 1st day hunting I took a nice 4x4 but we knew there was a bigger one around. Hunted there two more days straight, when back to camp in the evening and everyone was talking about where they were going the next morning and me and my dad had said we were going to give that place a rest till evening than hunt it.Well that morning a couple of so called hunting buddies from camp went there and shot the 4x5 my dad been after. Yeah I was pissed off....felt like my dad and I did all the scouting for them. we had been there for 7 days and this guy had been there for 1. I don't tell my hunting spots to anybody....not even friends.  When they ask me I tell them I went to Smackout......I never go there

Understand your guys frustartions... There are some hunter sleft taht hold true to the word. I have had a great tip on aspot and not told a word. Been there only by myself as I was grateful to have the tip from agreat hunter on this site. Sorry about the bad luck guys. I do have some NE spots and I dare dont share them unless I have alot of trust.

Learned my lesson a long time ago, had an awesome bear baiting station in Alaska, took one person in there, the next year there were at least 30 registered bait stations off that trail.

Now I never tell anyone where I am hunting, most of the time my hunting parnter is my wife and she sleeps there and on the way back so I know she will never tell anyone either

Been in the same situation man, it sucks!  That is one of the main reasons that I do not allow people to hunt my land.  I thought I was being a good guy by letting a "friend" take his kid hunting on my land to get his first deer.  All I asked is that they hunted alone, did not shoot any does and didnt make a mess.  Not too much to ask, eh?  Well, I find out that not only did the dad and his son hunt my place but 2 friends of theirs, a grandfather and an uncle.  Out of the 6 they shot 3 does and 2 spikes.  Needless to say I don't have anything to do with them anymore.  I've also stopped giving out specific honey hole info for the same reason.  I tried to help out a couple of guys from another board with spots that used to produce for me.  Both times I later found out that not only did they get nice bucks (one a 150 class whitie) but so did their friends and now they have made these spots a yearly group tradition.  The part that really sucks is after I gave them the detailed information I never heard from them again, not even a thanks for putting them on a good spot or anything.  I had to find out by reading it on another forum.  I love helping folks out but I have been burned too many times and am pretty guarded about my spots now.

I thought I had a friend in the N.W.T.F. grope in Colville. I was on the committee for the banquite in Colville. I came to the meeting one night and this so called friend asked hows it going. I said good killed a limit of geese today. He said were? I said ########. Then he said he guides geese around sprage lake. But don't worry I don't hunt around #########. The next thing I know he calls me to say He saw some geese in the area I hunt. "just letting you know about them in the field in case you want to hunt them." Stubed me I said, O that's so and so's field. The next thing I knew he talked to the land owner and was in. GUIDING. I work and he would hunt during the week so no geese on the weekends. I was out scouting and caught him looking at some geese. I called him out on it and he said no I not guiding just hunting myself. I took the next day off of work and watched him and his clients hunt that field. It's to bad these money people screw it for the Joe blow and there kids to hunt. He also locked up land for his guiding.

This sorta crap happens all the time. It pisses me off! I have run into this so many times in my life it's not even funny. To the point where people have followed me to see where i was hunting. The law should state that you get to beat the hell out of people that do this sort of thing. I can't stand the disrespectfull type's who do this and think they own the world. you have every right to be pissed and i think you should make damn sure your "friend" knows how you feel. God knows i always let people like this know there place.

I used to have a good duck spot in SW Washington, but I took the wrong guy in years back and it spread like wildfire.  Now it is hunted 7 days a week and not worth damn. 
I'm sure this site also has killed a few good sites as well unfortunately.

Had the same thing happen to a sweet blacktail honey hole.  A "buddy" went with me, and the next season, 8 trucks parked in there opening weekend.      The "buddy" being one of them.   Then Weyerhauser went in and logged it the next summer, and ruined the spot anyway.

Just to one up y'all:
We invited a fellow WTF member (local chapter president?) out to a honey hole one afternoon. He met us at the spot, marked it on his GPS, and said, "I know a better spot!"
He took us there, and without telling us, he sneaks off...went back to our honey hole and took a big tom.

We were fools to invite him out there.  He later took the his whole crew out there.  From now on, I'm sending guys like that on wild goose chases.

A few years back I had taken a retired guy into one of my spots and asked him not to hunt it with out me.  He said no problem.  He would call to see if I was going to hunt it over the weekend as I worked M-F, I said yes.  He couldn't make it out on Sat.  The hunt wasn't that great the birds were acting skitish on the blind, couldn't figure it out.  It normally was a dead ringer for an early limit.  Took the follow Friday off and decided to hunt my spot and I got out there a little earlier than normal.  Saw a flash light walking towards the blind.  Just sat there and let them walk up on the blind.  It was the guy I had shown the spot and two of his friends.  He was hunting it the Friday before the weekend.  I said some kind words and that was the end of me helping him out.

Very few people I'd let know about my spots. Have been bitten... short story is next year the guy came back with three other people and their lazy asses rode a four wheeler around a locked gate, that clearly stated no motorized access. Last time I hunted with him.

I hear ya, the day after I shot my bull and unfortunatly never found it, there were 10 million fr's in there. I've been hunting in there for 8 years and it just multiplies every year. that spot is no longer a secret, everyone in the country knows about it. Than you get all these f n new comers that claim they been hunting there forever,( not.)

I grew up in Texas where there is almost zero public land so I find it funny that you are guys complaining about not being able to keep your part of the public land secret. It is public land...and all the more impressive that you can get a kill with everyone else nearby. In Texas you pay for a hunting lease and then share it with those same jacka$$es you are complaining about here. There are many hunters that really don't understand the hunting tradition and give hunting a bad name at the same time as piss off the good hunters. I for one am not one of them and I expect there are a few others like me on this forum.

Personally, I find it frustrating that you seem to be saying that since my family has not hunted here for generations, I shouldn't get recommendations about where to hunt in general or an opportunity to hunt private land.

I plan to raise my family in this state and I will find some good hunting spots to pass down that tradition. So far it has been by trial and error. Honestly, more error than trial but I will keep looking for the good spots (that may already be occupied by you).

I would like to thank many of the old salts on this forum that have shared some very good information. This is an amazing state for numerous reasons. The access to public lands and variety of game are way up on the list for me.

I think your missing the point here. I don't think anyone is denying that public lands are here for us all to hunt. It is when you take a buddy along and hope he can keep it quite because it is a GOOD hunting spot. When you spend a few days, or weeks, or months, or even years in some instantses you kind offf like to recieve the fruits of your own labor. I have shared info. with many people and will continue to do so. I think what most people are talking about here is when some take it to the extreme and you can actually get pushed out of a place you have done all the homework in.   I too have lived in TX. and I know what you are talking about. And you are right that this a great state to live in. I just think you may have misunderstood what most were trying to convay. If you showed up at a place I like to hunt....that's fine.  If I showed you my honey hole and said keep this place quite   and next year you were there with 10 of your other buddies and five of thier brothers....not so much.

I have a few spots that I have earned by wearing out boot leather.  You are doing the same, and no matter what state you're from - there isn't a damn thing wrong with that.  In fact, many would argue that is what it's all about... I think what these guys are (rightfully) bemoaning is the scrubs that you share your hard earned spot with and they treat it with the same respect they do anything else that is just given to them.  A great hunting spot is worth exactly what you put into it. If that sounds weird, believe me, you'll know that when you have to decide who to share them with.
I got burned for the last time this fall from a person I expected it the least from.  Never again.

Situation A:  if you ask somebody "hey where's a good place to start hunting"... You'll know if you can share the spot by if they say "Leave from X_______ trailhead, hike in 5.43 miles, there will be a drainage on your left and one on your right, hike into the west side of the left drainage and glass the upper 2/3rds of that ridge first light/last light and during the day glass the top of the ridge"....etc

Situation B:  If they say "Yeah, a good area to start is the SouthEnd of the X______ wilderness, a few trailheads you can try are X_______ and X_______ glass, glass glass and once again, glass the shadows!  Good luck!"

Situation A:  That is a honey hole, make sure and ask him if he wants it kept under the radar, most of the time the source will say exactly that...

Situation B:  Hey man, go find a honey hole and heed the advice given!

Happens all the time.  Nope I say nothing other then the state I killed it in.  Or if I do say an area you can bet it was not the correct one.  To each his own, but good hunting areas are hard to find, and even harder to keep the hordes out of.  And yes it only takes a couple people to totally change an area or animal movement.

i gave 3 guys the location os my "secret" spot for this archery season. and i am not looking forward to next year. becuase these 3 guys all tagged out so i know they are forsure gonna be back. and they all 3 seen alot of elk there, and nothing in the surrounding area. which was the exact same case last season when i found the spot. there were alot of elk there but not in the area surrounding this little marsh
